Globalization has fostered the interconnections worldwide, and the liberalization of trade and financial benefits increased the attractiveness for multinational corporation (MNC) participate in global business and investment. When MNC managed the international market, it also involved to deal with the differences in cultures, political, and other aspects. The cross-cultural management is a guarantee issue that MNCs need to pay attention to. Therefore, this course focuses on the cultural differences in selected countries and the applications of cross-cultural management in business.

After the lesson, we can briefly identify the cultural difference based on Hofstede’s theory. For example, the degree of individualism can understand the working structure and values of a particular culture, and management can base on the differences and make changes in management, such as job allocation. In a collectivist society, people identify themselves based on a social group, thus the decision-making process and job allocations are group-based. Depend on the scores of those dimensions can help the management though gap analysis and make changes in cross-culture management.

However, I think scores of each dimension is not meaningful without comparison. Because each society culture value is unique, we cannot identify the degree of strong or weak of one country culture. Management needs to depend on countries to examine the cultural value.

As previous mentioned that the diverse culture may appears in cross-culture management, such as misunderstanding in communication can occurs lots of conflicts in business practices. Management need to solve and reduce the conflicts as much as possible. There are mainly two approaches to conflict transformation, which is mediation and collaborative dialogue. For example, in the mediation process, it is related to the reconciliation in cultural dilemma, management can develop a win-win approach between each culture, it can continue synthesis the solutions by search similarities in culture. I think conflict management is necessary to a part of management success. Without any control to conflicts may increase the dissatisfaction and beneficial from synergy.

Implications in business practices
One of the main focus in this course is to learn about the implications in business practices. The increase of intercultural interactions in business, it is necessary to know the way and strategy to interact in diverse cultural values. The management functions in business related to planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling.
