Cross Country's History

Cross country’s history is unique and interesting because of how it was created and how some of these traditions are still being used today. Cross country was invented in the nineteenth century, which is the same as a game that was played called “hare and hounds”. There are a couple of concepts that they kept the same from the game “Hare and Hounds” to cross country. For example, they still call the person who is leading the race “The Bunny” or “Hare”. In 1837 English schools started having formal cross country meets.The first established national championship for the United States took place in 1890.     “It was a such pretty day that day, it was a really picture perfect sky, blue skies, the marathon feeling is that everybody is really upbeat and excited,” said Melinda Arredondo, when describing the 117th Boston Marathon on April 15th of 2013. Carlos and Melinda Arredondo stood at the finish line of the marathon with 400 small American flags to hand out to finished runners in honor of their two sons, Alex and Brian, who had passed away.
