Cross Country Team Research Paper

Decent Essays
Among the piles of homework and stress from school, Cross Country has been a welcome extracurricular activity for me. Running on the Cross Country team has helped to diffuse stress and help to increase both my focus and efficiency in school. In addition, the Cross Country team has aided in helping me find new friends, which tends to be a most difficult task for me. However, most importantly, running Cross Country has taught me the value of working both smart and hard, especially in difficult situations.

Three years ago, as a freshman, I decided to join cross country. This decision has shaped my high school career through the friends I chose to the activities I participated in. Cross country is not an easy sport, though. It requires physical endurance, but more importantly, the mental strength to push past and overcome the obstacle of pain. By sticking with this sport, mental toughness has permeated who I am and helped me go beyond the standards and work my way through trivial challenges and huge endeavors alike.…

While I have not had nearly as many hardships in my life as Jeannette Walls in her book The Glass Castle, there are still some things that her and I have in common. Throughout the book, Walls endured many struggles while traveling with her dysfunctional family. Jeannette’s father is constantly getting in the way of her success, from stealing her money to not always making her go to school. Eventually, she leaves her parents behind and makes her way to New York City, where she goes to college and finds success. Similar to how Jeannette had to overcome the obstacles between her and her success, her parents in The Glass Castle, I had to overcome the obstacle between me and my success, my bones.…

From my last 3 years of running cross county I have learned a lot of things. One is that you should never give up, second is that if you work hard enough then you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and third is how you can go from disliking something to loving something. How I've learned these things from cross county is when I first started cross country, my sophomore year I couldn't run to save my life. Coach would always time us on how fast we could run two miles and I would always be last and be so far behind everyone else which was quite embarrassing but I couldn't help it I had just started and I'd never ran before in my life, at my very first meet I couldn't even run the first mile and I ended up having to drop out. After that I didn't like cross county at all because I wasn't good at it…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

I agree with you. Previously living in Phoenix, this was something I saw happen with the local high school cross country team each year when they would start training for the next school year during the hot Phoenix summer. You could always pick out those kids that were either freshman and new to running several miles or were out of shape. After a few weeks of training no one was getting sick any…

Particularly the sport I have participated in has taught me a large amount about teamwork. Sometimes in order to do our best I had to put my teammates before myself. In the future, I will be put in many situations where I must work together with people of different backgrounds ethnicities and viewpoints. Participating in a team sport has taught me to set aside differences in order to achieve a common goal. It has taught me how rewarding it is when you identify every individual’s strength and utilize those strengths.…

It helped me make new friends that I am still friends with till this day, it l pushed me to do things I normally wouldn't do, helped me accomplish things I never would have done alone, and a countless of other things but the best part I got out of it and continue to do so today is having opportunity to be part of such a great group of girls that support each other through everything and that share the same goals as everyone. As Brooks notes, "we are each other's business; we are each other's harvest, we are each other's magnitude and bond. "("we are each other's business" para 9). Despite the pain and stress in running, I couldn't be more glad to have joined cross country because it changed my life and I think a lot of the girls feel the same way, we are all glad to have chose this route. In "This is Water, Wallace says, "If you really want to make the world a better place, you need to start right here and right now.…
