Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the digestive tract. Participants were excluded if they had a medical condition that could affect cognition besides having Crohn’s disease such as pregnancy. There was a total of 49 patients with Crohn’s disease that were recruited from the Box Hill Hospital Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic and were confirmed to have Crohn’s disease according to histologic, endoscopic, or other imaging criteria. 31 healthy controls were recruited that matched well demographically to the participants with Crohn’s disease. A survey was mandatory for all participants to complete which assessed anxiety and depression in patients using the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale. The survey also included the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index to assess the quality of sleep within the past month of each member in the case study. The Subtle Cognitive Impairment Test (SCIT) was used to compare the cognitive function in patients with Crohn’s disease versus the healthy controls and two separate disease-related and patient related factors that may be associated with cognitive abnormality. The SCIT only takes four minutes and can detect cognitive reduction without having any gender or cultural bias. The patients are asked to make a quick decision on which line is shorter on the computer screen and is measured by the Subtle Cognitive Impairment Test-response time (SCIT-RT). Participants who answers in less than 65 ms is considered the head of the curve
