Crock-Pot Rhetorical Analysis

Since the Crock-Pot brand’s debut 35 years ago, it has found immense success and popularity with cooks and non-cooks alike. The Crock-Pot brand has become so popular than it has become embedded in the English vernacular as a synonym for “slow-cooker.” For those who don't know, a Crock-Pot is a stand-alone electrical cooking appliance that is used for simmering. Since simmering requires a low temperature and many hours to cook, the Crock-Pot is ideal for those people who want a good meal, but do not want to be chained to the stovetop all day. Clearly, the Crock-Pot is not the only slow-cooker on the market, so how has it gained so much prominence in the slow-cooker market? The Crock-Pot’s success is due in part by the clever utilization of rhetoric on it’s packaging. The use of rhetoric allows for the Crock-Pot brand to persuade it’s audience, made up of both cooks and non-cooks, to believe the message that Crock-Pot is superior to any other slow-cooker or conventional oven on the market. Crock-Pot does this by simply covering their packaging in positively connoted diction that proves how logical of a decision it is to purchase a Crock-Pot. On every façade of a Crock-Pot’s packaging, Crock-Pot makes claims such as, “dishwasher safe,” “original,” “trusted,” “durable,” “time-saving,” “perfect,” and “high-quality.” The diction used by Crock-Pot is loaded with positive connotations. This diction is utilized to make purchasing a Crock-Pot a “no-brainer.” Because any self-respecting cook with any logic at all should jump at the opportunity to own a “trusted,” “original,” and “high-quality” product that can “[save time]” in the kitchen by being “durable” enough to be “dishwasher safe” and by being “perfect” for busy cooks who want a well-cooked
