Critique of Reflection on “Excerpt from Why School?” By Mike Rose In this article, Professor Mike Rose reflects about an encounter many years before in the library of a community college, where an underprivileged adult student with learning disabilities from a prior injury is working to improve his education through a program that the college offers for continuing education of adults that were not prepared for college education. The specific story that he is telling relates to Anthony who is in the library seeking information on cocaine abuse to give to his daughter, as he is trying to make a better future for the both of them (320). Some of the things he forgets to mention are, other than Rose, Anthony, and the Librarian, who else was in the library? Were they bothering anybody with their talking? Adding some of these details would put more of an understanding to reality in a Community College library. Additionally, Rose brings up the educational program for the underprivileged individuals; yet, he provides nothing more about the program. He provides a little of Anthony 's background, which justifies the unprepared/under-prepared aspect of the educational program, but nothing more (320). The story seems to be an attempt to explain the educational program without providing anything more than a single vignette with a program participant. He indicates that Anthony had a head injury as a child (learning disability), had an encounter with the legal system which mandated at least a parole officer, regardless of incarceration (legal obstruction to employment and education), and apparently a single parent trying to raise a daughter, despite his limited education and job opportunities (social and employment disability). Rose sets up an ideal character for under-prepared/unprepared education, which is the candidate for the educational system; yet he never developed the educational system
