(Critique of No WitchCraft for Sale)
“That is what learning is. You suddenly understand something you've understood all your life, but in a new way”(Lessing). Doris Lessing a British novelist and poet wrote many stories in the 20th century. One of Lessing’s most popular story was called No WitchCraft For Sale. This story takes place in Africa that involves two cultures, a rich white family, and a poor African American family. In the story, No WitchCraft For Sale Doris Lessing poses three very important messages which are, trust, racism, and peer pressure.

The story takes place in Africa where there are white people that live with the blacks. The time that the story took place Civil Rights was not yet an issue. Gideon was the servant of a rich white family for several years was an African American man. Werley Nortreus a gospel artist states, “ The world that we live in would be perfect if there were less prejudiced and people who think they are better than others.” This quote talks about how the in the world there are so many people who are prejudiced and think they are better than someone because of their skin. The story poses a good example of prejudice. One of the ways the story shows racism is by this line in the story, “Teddy Said defiantly, ‘he's only a black boy,’ and laughed”(1330). This quote came from Teddy who was the son of the white family. Teddy was talking about Gideon's son, saying that he did not matter because he was black. In Teddy’s opinion, he was more important than Gideon’s son. Nelson Mandela, a South African political Leader states “ No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. People learn to hate.” Mandela states that people learn to be biased by their family or the people they are around. In the story, Gideon is pressured into giving the scientist his home made the remedy to heal blindness. Gideon doesn’t want to tell the scientist his secret but eventually falls into peer pressure and leads them on a two-hour search for the weed he used. After a two hour look, he picks up a random weed and gives it to the scientist. We never know if that was the actual weed that he gave the scientist or just a random one that he picked up. He fell under the pressure of the scientist and went to look for the weed that they wanted. Steve Maraboli a psychologist, states“ Don’t let anyone dilute you. Don’t be peer pressured into being less than you are. People willing to dilute themselves for the sake of others are one of the great tragedies of our time. Stop letting others define and set the pace for your life.” Maraboli states that don't fall into something that you don't want to do. Gideon didn't want to give the scientist his secret information to his healing. Peer pressure is clearly a message presented in this
