Diet Analysis Of My Food Selection

Improved Essays
In this paper I report my diet analysis of my food selection over a 7 day period during August 31th- September 12th. My availability of food is not of concern because if I don’t feel like making food at my apartment, I usually order Café Brule or Qdoba. On average I spend $20 a week at fast food places. I go to the grocery store every week if not every other averaging $30 per trip. My grocery list usually looks like this: soy milk, bananas, apples, yogurt, breakfast bars, deli meat, carrots, bread, and cheese, sugar free Red Bull, and frozen meals occasionally. The most expensive items on my list are fresh produce, meat and milk. I am fortunate enough to receive grocery money from my parents; therefore I am always provided a meal. As I am not …show more content…
I started this food diary during the beginning of Fall Semester, so I was busy preparing for school and getting organized in all my classes. I failed to take time going to the grocery store and stock up on food and instead would go every other day to get what I felt like eating that day. Due to this, I ate out at fast food more frequently than normal because it was convenient to my schedule. That being said, I would skip a meal or not snack at all because of my schedule, when on a normal week I cherish breakfast, lunch and dinner time. Meal planning was the least of my concern this week so that hindered my eating pattern significantly. My diet is very different on the weekdays compared to the weekends. For me, having a routine helps with my eating patterns, but on the weekends I am out of routine, and sleep more frequently which negatively affected my meals. Since I sleep in on the weekends I normally don’t have breakfast, or contain adequate water intake. I also eat out more on the weekends if my boyfriend comes in town or if I go …show more content…

For me, the numbers were not all that shocking to me. As someone who does meal prepping, I am very conscious of what I eat because it will effect my results in and out of the gym. So to begin with, I did pretty well when it came to vitamins and minerals. I was shocked to find out that my vitamin C came out to 352% of my daily value! Coming in at second is my vitamin B12 at 250%. I Believe that my high amount of vitamin B12 could be from my large consumption of animal products, such as milk. My third highest nutrient is no surprise at all. The number three spot goes to protein. At the time that I was doing this project, I was doing my best to lean down a little bit to prepare for bulking season. As I searched to lean down, I was very careful that I did not lose my muscle mass. In order to do this, I made sure that I consumed as much protein as I could whilst keeping calories as low as possible. This prevented me from going Catabolic. I managed to squeeze in 185% of my daily value for protein by consuming protein shakes, lean tilapia, and the leanest ground steak I could…

Health and nutrition, particularly my own, is something I have taken special interest in lately as I’ve come to realize I’m rapidly approaching the second half of my life and want it to be as good as, or even better than, the first half. If I were to be asked eight weeks ago if I was a healthy person, my answer would be a resounding, “Yes;” my regular physicals and blood work confirming my response. And while I still believe that to be true, what an eye opener the Diet Analysis project was, as far as understanding my actual nutritional intake in comparison to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of nutrients recommended for optimal health and well-being. The following paragraphs not only detail the Diet Analysis PLUS program used for this project,…

Looking at what I eat now I need to change my diet. For breakfast I usually have a Nutri- Grain Strawberry or an apple and a bottle of water, on the go of course. On the other hand if I'm really in a hurry and need to grab gas for my car I just pick up a french vanilla coffee and a blueberry muffin. This already breaks two of pollan's food rules which is do all you're eating at a table and don’t get your fuel the same place as your car. I need to improve on this because you tend to eat more when you’re in a car or train. Also the food choices that I am making are very poor because their is a lot of calories in a muffin and a coffee. During the summer when more fruits and vegetables are in season my family and I usually go to the farmers market in the morning to get fresh fruits and vegetables which are grown locally. In addition during the summer my sister has her own garden which she grows tomatoes, green onion, cantaloupe etc…. In the summer it’s a lot easier to get fresh foods in Minnesota rather than in the winter. Moving on when I go to the grocery market I usually shop all over the place but usually in the middle aisles because that's where I can find pudding, sugary cereals and candy. When I do go to Cub or Target it’s usually a fast run if I need milk I will only run in and get a jug of milk than pay and right…

The greatest consistent deficiency in my diet was protein. Throughout all three days I was under the target amount. I would say that I need to add more foods that have a large amount of protein such as; turkey, fish (halibut), and egg whites. Not only was I under the target amount for protein, I was also under the target amount of dietary fiber. This means I need to start eating foods with more dietary fiber such as; brown rice, artichoke hearts, and oatmeal.…

Reviewing the vitamin section of my 5-day dietary report it is apparent that I am failing to reach the DRI for the vitamin Alpha-Tocopherol and vitamin D while surpassing the DRI for vitamin A. To increase my consumption of Alpha-Tcocphaerol (vitamin E) I can consume more avocados, spinach, and egg yolks are also a good source. To increase my vitamin D in take to reach the DRI I can consume more fish such as tuna and salmon. Lastly, my diet was high in vitamin A that can be harmful to my health if it builds up for the remaining part of my life. In order to reach an appropriate range of vitamin A in my diet I will can consume less carrots as I eat them regularly as a snack throughout my day.…

To be more specific the report says I am under in calcium, which I can counter by adding more dairy in my diet like milk, cheese and yogurt. According to the report, my saturated fat is over and greater than 10% which is not good. Reducing my fat intake by consuming lean meats like sirloin instead of ribeye will help tremendously also changing the oils it is cooked in, for example switching from canola to olive oil will greatly reduce the saturated fat intake this will also help in lowering cholesterol and further aid in weight loss. Likewise my dietary fiber is also low by 18% and by consuming more fiber can aid in my body to better dealing with my saturated fat issue. Consuming more fiber can also help in the Linoleic acid which is derived from vegetables and adding vegetables like dark greens, this is the solution for the two problems in my mineral report. Over consumption of salt is the explanation of the sodium overage in my body switching salt with Mrs. Dash or other salt replacement or just reducing the salt intake will dramatically the risks associated with sodium like hyper tension and heart disease. All the minerals and vitamins I am lacking from this report is gained by the multi vitamin supplement prescribed by my doctor and is absent in my food…

For me, being deficient in these nutrients doesn’t only mean that I am lacking them in my diet, it also means that there could be some short and long-term health consequences that develop by being deficient in these nutrients. For Potassium deficiency, also known as hypokalemia, some of the short -term consequences that could develop are: weakness, fatigue, constipation, muscle twitches, nausea and vomiting. Some of the long-term health consequences that come with Potassium deficiency are: heart arrhythmias, low blood pressure, loss of muscle control (bowel), excessive urination, extreme thirst, and loss of appetite. For Calcium deficiency, there aren’t any short-term consequences with the early stage of calcium deficiency, but as the disease carries on severe and long-term consequences could arise. Some of the long term consequences that could develop are memory lose, muscle spasms, numbness and tingling in the hands, feet, and face, depression, and hallucinations. Major components of having an adequate diet is, when you choose the foods, what you choose to eat must provide all the essential nutrients, such as fibers and energy in amounts that maintain health and support growth. With that being said, I would give myself a C in this category after reviewing my food and nutrient reports. There were just way too many food groups and essential nutrients that I was not meeting.…

Every individual needs some vitamins, minerals and water in the body. These minerals and vitamins are essential for the body. Based on the nutrition analysis project part 1, I realized I was lacking in some essential and nonessential minerals and vitamins which I need to work on how to improve the intake or how to minimize the amount I take. I used three days in collecting my diet analysis though I could have added another day. The three days I used in collecting, the data was not consecutive since I do not exercise every day. I collected two during the week and one during the weekend. I chose two days during the week because I realized I have more time to my self during the weekend than during the day. I wanted to know how that could affect…

The daily calorie intake is based on basal metabolic rate (BMR) of 1789. The BMR was calculated with a BMR calculator entering height, weight, gender and age for a total of 1154. The daily calorie needs calculated included the BMR times 1.55 to include moderate active exercise three to five times a week. A total for 1789 BMR is needed to maintain current weight. The average calorie intake from the three day diet history was 1881 BMR. The total average calorie intake of 1881 is 5 % over the BMR recommended to function and sustain current weight. If the activity level of exercise decreased or increased or medical conditions are involved, the BMR would need to be recalculated. Water intake can vary from 2 liters to 3 liters per day depending on activities. The 2.7 liters of water per day recommended amounts is not always reached. Fluid is taken in by mostly water and tea. I normally follow a diet restricted in consuming wheat and gluten due to some health concerns. The following are my findings of each nutrient tracked and percentage of RDA. The allowances are based on daily recommended requirements. The RDA amounts are from tables supplied in the textbook Understanding Normal and Clinical Nutrition used for current class BIO 127 and other…

However, more often than not most people myself included, do not comply with, and often exceed the recommended maximum amount. Moreover, the food logs provide an oversimplified picture of my nutritional intake. One important thing I observed from my food logs is while I am exceeding the daily recommend amount of calories, I am not meeting my nutritional needs. For example, I am not getting a sufficient amount of dairy, protein, or calcium; strangely, I do enjoy eating these foods. After doing some research, I discovered strategies to deal with this problem. For instance, according to peta.org, one can replace regular dairy milk with rice or soymilk. In my food logs, while this alternative would not count toward a dairy product, it would, however, provide me a good source of calcium and protein. Another area of concern I evaluated from my food logs was a lack of fruits and vegetables. The results did not come as a surprise to me, on account that I have always struggled with eating an adequate amount of both categories. I often find the taste of vegetables unappealing, which is why I made my behavior change for the semester related to this…
