Provocative and controversial— two words that properly describe Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and Sophocles’s Antigone. Many of the characters, especially the females, in these two plays seem to make decisions that are rather provocative and controversial. The women in both of these plays defy moral and societal expectations placed upon them by overbearing, arrogant men while the men in these plays continually belittle and degrade women. The Bible, arguably one of the most controversial and popular Holy books ever written, seems to challenge and even condemn many of the decisions made by the main characters in these two plays. Nora’s slam in the door, to some Christians, seem like a slam in the face to God. There are many verses in which God says that a married women is supposed to care for her household and submit to her husband. There are even certain verses in the Bible that apply to Nora’s complicated, difficult situation. 1 Peter 3:1 says that “Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives.” So, according to this passage Torvald’s insensitive, even somewhat “politely abusive” behavior did not mean that Nora could just leave her husband without warning., but instead, should have stayed in submission to her husband in her actions so that he might see the errors of his own ways and change. On the other hand, some Christians claim that Nora had every right to separate from her husband and children, however, not divorce him. Since there are no passages in the Bible that condemn separation between man and wife, Nora’s separation would not have been unbiblical. In fact, it is probably necessary for a woman to separate from her husband if he treats her in such a horrible fashion.
