Critical Thinking: The Censorship Of Pornography

Improved Essays
In my opinion, the concept of thinking critically involves deep thinking and concentration in evaluating things around you – what it is, why it occurred and how. Critical thinking also allows you to be conscious about the ideas and actions of yours as well as others. This would include questioning the credibility and source of information given by others. Therefore broadmindedness is often a trait of critical thinkers – they are able to weigh and “be critical” to ideas produced via multiple perspectives.
On the other hand, non-critical thinking simply means to receive information blindly (like sponges soaking water). People who don’t “think critically” tend to be biased and will rarely relate to other perspectives. As such, non-critical thinkers would not be able to argue as effectively as critical thinkers.

Jacoby’s essay is more focused on how pornography cannot be censored and that there are different views to pornography. Some may see it as a form of entertainment, some others may see it as a form of elitism or sexism. Due to the vague definition of pornography, on top of the fact that she based on the first amendment that any kind of censorship is violating freedom, Jacoby based herself on a very strong evidence from the action took by the congress itself – an authority figure to support her thesis.
However, Brownmiller insists that pornography should be censored as explicitly stated in the title: “Let’s put pornography back into the Closet.” (pg. 61) Brownmiller also wrote that the purpose of pornography is to humiliate and degrade female bodies for pleasure and she believes that pornography is immoral to humanity. She explained how female bodies are “mutilated” and “raped” (pg. 62) in pornography and she explained in such a way that pornography sounds like a form of entertainment at the cost of the dignity of

In “Perils of Pornophobia” Nadine Strossen argues that pro censorship of all pornography is not the answer. Strossen describes a number of situations, where artistic paintings and photographs of woman’s nude bodies were removed from public viewing because of censorship. She states that pro-censorship feminists design their arguments on the premise that getting rid of pornography from society would reduce sexism and violence against women. She argues that Pornophobia would simply collide feminists in their battle for women’s liberation and rights. Strossen implies that many pornophobic feminists conclude that sex is degrading to women and that even consensual or nonviolent sex is evil and so women must be confined.…

Langton’s article “Speech Acts and Unspeakable Acts ” argues that pornography silences women. This is similar to Katherine MacKinnon’s thesis and throughout the rest of her article, Langton labels pornography as a speech act, or an utterance, which has illocutionary effects that support MacKinnon’s claims of: 1) pornography subordinating women and 2) pornography silencing women. Langton introduces the terms locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary to explain the effects of pornography. To explain how women are subordinated as a result of pornographic speech acts, the locutionary effect would be a portrayal of what is acceptable in sex, the perlocutionary would be that these “rules” or “methods” depicted rank women as having less worth than men, and the illocutionary would be that women are unfairly subordinated as inferior. Similarly to subordination, pornographic speech acts silence women.…

The idea proposed by Nadine Strossen in Why Censoring Pornography Would not Reduce Discrimination or Violence against Women is that “censoring pornography would do women more harm than good.” She states this because Strossen believes that the assumption that censorship of pornography would result in the reduction of violence and sexism against women must be in agreeance with the three following points directly from Strossen’s Free Speech, Sex, and the Fight for Women’s Rights: (i) exposure to sexist, violent imagery leads to sexist, violent behavior, (ii) the effective suppression of pornography would reduce exposure to sexist, violent behavior, and (iii) censorship would effectively suppress pornography. However, there is no trustworthy evidence to justify these three points. Therefore, I agree with this statement and will argue against the censorship of pornography.…

The diverse ways in which critical thinking can be applied are astonishing. One may find themselves in a group project working towards a common goal and an individual would find it immensely helpful to be able to process the ideas or statements and go through steps exploring possible problems, solutions, and meanings. In a professional environment, possessing this skill would demonstrate not only competency, but leadership. In a meeting, one may be asked what one thinks of the ideas that have been discussed and it would serve one well to be able to analytically and intellectually reflect on what has been discussed and arrive at an answer to a problem that one’s peers would comprehend. Possessing the skill of thinking critically is crucial in all parts of life; it is a skill that will be easily noticed and assist one in answering any question that…

Thinking clearly may seem like a very simple activity, but being able to think clearly involves a great deal of cognitive discipline, that requires an individual to be able to focus on the subject matter that is being analyzed despite distractions. This makes it necessary for an individual that is seeking to become a critical thinker to ignore all of the thoughts that they are having that are not related to this subject matter that is being analyzed. Without having the discipline to be able to quiet the mind and to focus properly, it is very difficult to become an effective and proficient critical thinker. A third important challenge of becoming a critical thinker, is gaining the amount and level of knowledge that is necessary to become an effective critical thinker. This is due to the fact that in order to become a critical thinker an individual must have a vast amount of knowledge from which to draw upon, in order to be able to critically analyze a situation in a manner that will lead to the development of valid rational conclusions.…

Ellen Willis, another feminist philosopher, believes that Longino’s definition of pornography could potentially hurt women psychologically (112). Society has had some history of repressing women’s sexuality. Defining what pornography is appropriate for women supports an idea that women cannot determine what is appropriate and beneficial for themselves. Women who watch pornography should not be shamed for exploring their sexuality (Willis, 113). Anti-pornography feminists, like Longino, claim that porn reduces female porn stars to sex objects, but this claim robs the performers of control over their bodies (Longino, 106).…

The 1973 court case of Miller vs. California, pushed pornography into the public eye by addressing the fact that it first existed and then deciding that any form of sexually explicit material was in violation and that obscenity would need to have a boundary. Although this decision decided to suppress porn and all that it stood for, its step into the media created an interest in the American people and help grow the tolerant attitude towards issues dealing with sex and marriage (“Obscenity”) that we now know today. It was not until the 1980’s and 1990’s that the debate between whether or not porn was degrading to women became relevant to the public. During this time pornography had moved from the borders of sketchy places to mainstream media becoming central images for modern lifestyle (Langman 657). This caused this time period to be coined as the “porn wars”, because it highlights a time where feminist were greatly divided on the issue of porn and how it affected women as a whole.…

Pornography, in a diverse range of mediums, has existed for many decades now—and while the harmful effects on society are pervasive, they may not be well known to the public. The reach and depth of pornography’s influences has been a continually debated issue amongst feminists in many scopes, both individual and societal. Here, I present the two differing perspectives held by feminists on this issue and seek to dissect and analyze the arguments held by both sides in relation to the battle between sexual autonomy and safety. While anti-pornography feminists assert that pornography use is just as harmful to the consumer as it is to the women being objectified, coerced, and abused in its production, sex-positive feminists argue that restricting…

Many justify lots of things with claiming it’s their freedom of speech, but in this act, it doesn’t work. It is said plain and clear that the freedom given is of speech, not of actions. Every action has a reaction be it positive or negative, and pornography as seen above can have negative outcomes. In the United States any action against the law must be answered for, and though pornography isn’t illegal, child pornography is, and who knows maybe the United States will follow the actions of countries like India (though it lifted its ban on pornography…
