Critical Thinking Strategies For Success

Improved Essays
My thinking process is something I have actually thought a great deal about. I often wonder why I think the way I do and about the things I think about. I tend to overthink everything. I think up the worse possible scenario for the simplest things. I would like to improve my thinking process. According to Paul, Elder, Gunther, Chartrand, Emery, Hall, and Maketa (2007), "excellence in thinking requires a variety of independent skills and traits that work together" (p. 57 para. 5). To improve one's thinking, Paul et al. suggest emphasizing on fundamentals and starting slowly.

The diverse ways in which critical thinking can be applied are astonishing. One may find themselves in a group project working towards a common goal and an individual would find it immensely helpful to be able to process the ideas or statements and go through steps exploring possible problems, solutions, and meanings. In a professional environment, possessing this skill would demonstrate not only competency, but leadership. In a meeting, one may be asked what one thinks of the ideas that have been discussed and it would serve one well to be able to analytically and intellectually reflect on what has been discussed and arrive at an answer to a problem that one’s peers would comprehend. Possessing the skill of thinking critically is crucial in all parts of life; it is a skill that will be easily noticed and assist one in answering any question that…

Cognition is something that must be owned by anyone who has a goal of finding a place in today’s job market. This is because the ability to process and acquire information through thought experience and sense is crucial in ones working environment. In Sanford J Ungar’s essay “The New Liberal Arts” he believes that obtaining a college education focused on liberal arts is the best way that the workers of tomorrow will be prepared for the constantly changing job market that they will soon have to explore in the future. Because of Ungar’s argument one may ask the question, is a liberal arts degree the only way to obtain the skills needed in the workplace? While some may jump to answer yes to this question others may have something else in mind.…

Critical thinking in general has never been one of one of my strong suits, but I believe that out of the 7 characteristics provided by Ruggiero the one that represents my greatest strength is that I tend to think before acting. I was taught early on that thinking before doing will, one help in success and two lead you on a better path in life. Acting impulsively can be very pleasing and come with an adrenaline rush, but in the end did you really make the right choice for yourself. My father is a perfect model for someone who acts without thinking, yes he has had much success in his life, but due to his impulsive behavior there has been many failures to follow those acts that have ended in success. In multiple situations in my life I have had…

Critical thinking for some people is considered, as a negative word, but it is not true. It is related with our cognitive ability and how we analyze situations that affected our decisions. The intellectual perseverance to pursue insights or truths despite obstacles or difficulties is my strongest critical thinking trait. I deem it is vital to face any situation in the life. Unfortunately, worst events are presented constantly on daily life.…

My life goal is to run my own business in the future. When I imitatively formed a team in school; when I sparked the creative idea of selling Korean hot pot at the party; when I successfully persuade my sponsors to support our conference with free food; when I designed and uploaded my own advertisements online, and saw they were favored again and again; when my limited discount coupons were sold out during the pre-sale – I realized that my blueprint was actually coming true step-by-step and I felt excited about the unknown challenges. However, I’m also well aware that prospective business activities are not as easy as those practices I’ve experienced. Except for business sense and knowledge, critical thinking, which is exactly what I’m trying to improve, plays an important role in the real business world. Mount Holyoke College (MHC) is the place where I can discover what I am truly seeking for.…

After all, critical thinking is something that is normally executed on a daily basis; certain individuals are relatively very knowledgeable and can communicate quickly and effectively on any given subject. Indeed, something became apparent after the fifth reading that I really need to overcome my lack of understanding in this subject. As I read each line over and over I honestly thought I lack the ability of those skillful thinkers. Could there be a need to take an additional writing class in order to overcome my fear every single time I need to write an assignment. It could have benefited me now in the obstacle in identifying what to write in the subject.…

Critical thinking is not only a process, but a skill that develops over the course of a person’s life. Dr. Linda Elder, the Assistant Director of the Center for Critical Thinking, created a stage theory of critical thinking development that defines critical thinking into six stages. In reference to the article by Linda Elder and Richard Paul “Critical Thinking Development: A Stage Theory,” I believe that stage four, the practicing thinker, best represents my development as a thinker. As previously mentioned, Dr. Linda Elder’s stage theory of critical thinking development consists of six stages. In stage one, Linda Elder argues that a majority of people begin heavily embedded in this stage of the “unreflective thinker.”…
