The diverse ways in which critical thinking can be applied are astonishing. One may find themselves in a group project working towards a common goal and an individual would find it immensely helpful to be able to process the ideas or statements and go through steps exploring possible problems, solutions, and meanings. In a professional environment, possessing this skill would demonstrate not only competency, but leadership. In a meeting, one may be asked what one thinks of the ideas that have been discussed and it would serve one well to be able to analytically and intellectually reflect on what has been discussed and arrive at an answer to a problem that one’s peers would comprehend. Possessing the skill of thinking critically is crucial in all parts of life; it is a skill that will be easily noticed and assist one in answering any question that…

Oyler, PharmD a,b and Frank Romanelli, PharmD, MPH and for the rest of this paper will be referred to as “the article”. In the article the authors discussed the value of critical thinking among health care professionals and re-visited the use of the Socratic method as a tool for modeling critical thinking due to increasing pressure from accrediting bodies and an evolving technical landscape, health care colleges and schools continue to place increasing emphasis on critical thinking skills rather than provision of facts and rote memorization. Numerous studies were done by the authors and found that understanding the “deep structure” to a problem is essential to critical thinking, the “deep structure” being the question within the question and not the question at face value. One way it has changed me is I didn’t know that critical thinking had involved asking yourself question about a current situation, for example asking yourself “what is going on in this situation and am I deceiving myself?” There is a lot of things to understand about critical thinking, you just can’t ask yourself the obvious question or think of a simply answer that sums everything up. For you to be a good critical thinker you need to be able to gather and analyze information, next you need to come to a reasonable conclusion, then you must think with an open mind and last you need to communicate effectively. All these are abilities that I didn’t know existed in critical thinking, but now I’m aware of them. I had first started using critical thinking in my English, math, and science classes but most of the time they had evolved just by thinking a little bit beyond of the questions.…
