Critical thinking is used every day in many walks of life. When a problem is encountered “Critical Thinking” is the thought process used. As stated by (Phillips and Norman) “Critical thinking empowers strategic intelligence support”. (Phillips, Norman 2008) Many organizations have accepted critical thinking as a standard practice and conduct training regularly. (Phillips, Norman, 2008) For my job specifically, critical thinking is something that occurs every day in high-stress situations. When responding to emergency’s first responders will use this process to determine the proper steps that need to be completed next. Whether it be a fireman responding to a medical call or the police responding to a shooting. These groups use this style of thinking for strategic planning for critical events and emergencies. For example, leaders use critical thinking when mapping out evacuation routes should a natural disaster occur. Scenario-based training will assist in the critical thinking process when simulating making “game-time” decisions for emergency service personnel. For critical thinking to work one must overcome and be aware of their own bias, assumptions, myths, and theories.
