Introduction
When students are taught critical thinking and reasoning at a young age they are able to succeed in advanced levels in higher education. Policy makers and educators have been at conflict over executing facts (basic skills) or critical thinking skills within educational institutions. This essay will aim to demonstrate why students are more academically advanced then other students when they are taught to use critical thinking and reasoning.

Teachers and faculty members may be uncomfortable teaching critical thinking and this can be for various reasons. One reason is due to the time and effort that it takes to teach these skills to students. In addition, the local governments and states seem to favor basic skills rather than implement critical thinking. Other factors that can be part of the problem, is that in poorer states and school districts it can be hard to find and employ teachers that will stay teaching within these schools. This can be attributed to the economic issues that involve the funds that are available to the school. In order to receive certain funds within these poorer districts, the school must abide by the federal guidelines for using basic skills instead of implementing critical theory within the curriculum. There are various ways for teachers and students to use critical thinking skills in the classroom. One method is to let the students ask questions, not everything should be cut and dry. When a student asks questions about a topic the student is making their own connections and using critical thinking skills. Additionally, group work helps students think as well as understand the other students thought processes. In addition, teachers should use open ended questions, there is no right or wrong answer, and students will be more inclined to think as well as participate. Teachers should also allow their students to try to figure problems and solutions out on their own, this shows students that they are capable of analyzing content and problem solving skills without the aid of a
