Critical Thinking and Ethics
Critical thinking is a process, not an outcome. It’s about how to think, not what to think. The critical thinking process arises from a critical attitude. It can be triggered by positive events as well as negative ones. Halpern (as cited in Fowler, 2002) defines critical thinking as “thinking that is purposeful, reasoned, and goal-directed – the kind of thinking involved in solving problems, formulating inferences, calculating likelihoods, and making decisions when the thinker is using skills that are thoughtful and effective for the particular context and type of thinking task.” (Fowler, 2002).

Critical thinking plays a huge role in ethics. Critical thinking is the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment. According to Barry K. Level one involves demonstrating you have learned basic knowledge about the subject and the ability to identify key topics. Level two is understanding the topic, combining the ability to interpret the meaning of facts and ideas. Level three requires the ability to apply the new information to situations or problems. Level four is to be able to analyze the information. Level five involves not only breaking down the information but being able to incorporate it with what you already know. Finally, level six is the ability to evaluate and assess the information to come up with your own
