Directly related to the modes of writing is tone. The Economist’ critical and bothered tone is more effective than Rampell’s formal yet contemplative tone. One example of the Economist’ critical tone is seen when the author is describing a troubling situation where colleges are spending money they do not have. They write,” At the same time, universities have been spending beyond their means. Many have taken on too much debt and have seen a decline in the health of their balance sheets.”(The Economist 686). Here, we see the Economist criticize the universities for using an unsubstantial amount of money that they do not have and it can cause the college to go into debt and compromise the credibility of the college. Despite the formality of her word choice her language also suggests contemplation of the topic. She writes, “But nearly all of those graduates are at least finding work and income of some kind, unlike a larger share of their less educated peers” (Rampell 679). Here, Rampell refers to graduates finding jobs easily due to the booming market, while others with just a high school diploma cannot get a job that easily due to employers requiring at least an Associates to be hired. Rampell’s contemplation of which jobs are available to a person suggests that she thinks graduates find and get accepted to jobs easier. Rampell’s formal and contemplative tone may resonate with people who share her same level of thinking, but may sit differently with those of lower level intelligence. This may be ineffective to the reader because they might have to figure out if Rampell is choosing sides when it comes to this job recession and the presentation of facts may give the reader the impression that they have gone back to math class.
