Most Significant Challenge Essay

What is the most significant challenge I’m facing so far in my teaching role? The most significant challenge I am facing so far, is having the feeling of complete control over the classroom without trying to micromanage every single student, task, and behavior. The feeling I currently have is that when I sense that I do not have control of the class, I tend to start micromanaging things. This is a behavior I want to work on internally, so that externally I show confidence. One way that I will work on this behavior is by not worrying so much about having a “zero-level” voice volume in the classroom. It’s almost impossible for students to not talk at all for an extended period of time. Instead, if someone is a repeat offender or is distracting themselves and other students, I will move them to a new seat. This is a timed math fact test that consists of 44 questions. My initial reaction when I heard we were timing third graders on math facts was, this doesn’t seem quite right and I wonder how this will play out. Yesterday, I had to give the math fact challenge while I was substitute teaching for my mentor. I felt like I had a lot of anxiety about how the test would go and which students would be upset at the end. During the test, I saw one student who often has breakdowns over work; start to look like he was about to breakdown. He ended up crying and almost hyperventilating over this math fact test. Another girl in my class was very upset when the test was over because she knew she did not pass because she did not have time to finish. These emotions brought down the entire mood of the class and I feel like it caused me to struggle through my math lesson. This alone is a reason not to give students timed
