"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,' 'just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had'" (Fitzgerald 1). In the novel, The Great Gatsby, this quote is said by Nick's father. You should not judge others without having all the facts about them; because people come from different backgrounds and grow up in different cultures. This advice is good to follow because the evidence showing it is true can be seen in the world today through people's experiences and through what is portrayed in movies.
First, this quote can be supported through the experience of my mother. She is not originally from the United States and did not know English when she came here. Once at a gas station, a worker had a hard time understanding her and became frustrated with her. He did not understand that she did not grow up in this country and did not know how to communicate. This shows that you should not criticize people for things you cannot control because it makes the other person feel discouraged. Along with her speaking inability, she could not write in English, either. She

One of example of this is the movie, The Pursuit of Happyness. It is about a man and his son who are homeless while the father is trying to get a stable job to provide for his family. The affluent businessmen look down on him at first for not being wealthy like them, but later realize his potential as an intelligent, hardworking man. Next, there is the movie, Slumdog Millionaire. It follows a poor boy who enters the show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? He makes it to the last question and he is then accused of cheating because the people did not believe a street boy could know the answers to those tough questions. This shows that the house you live in or the amount of money you make does not determine your intellect. No matter where you come from, if you try hard in life you can do anything you put your mind

After you finish reading the book: Number three Fitzgerald writes that the biggest fault of the book is not describing Gatsby and Daisy’s emotional relationship “...from the time of their reunion to the catastrophe.” He leaves it out from the start so the reader can formulate their own thoughts on the matter. Usually this is a good form of writing that many authors do; however, in this situation I agree with his statement in saying that adding their emotional relationship would make a more fulfilling novel. Including their talks and feelings for one another in depth would forge a new dynamic in the book that it currently lacks. Allowing the reading to peak into their conversations lets them perceive if Daisy truly loved Gatsby (or thought that she did).…

Rationale: Throughout the Great Gatsby novel, despite the extravagant parties that are held by Jay Gatsby in his mansion in particular, he is still remotely isolated from the public’s connection, as he remains to be recognized as a mysterious person. Since F.Scott Fitzgerald introduced Jay Gatsby as an isolated figure in the society throughout the novel, therefore the main objective of this written task is to introduce the true identity behind Jay Gatsby to the society and public. In-order to accomplish this task, I will be writing a written task based on Jay-Gatsby’s statement to a press conference where he will declare his true background stories and identity to the society as a whole. This type of text will allow me to explore my creativity…

The things is we tend to bite off more than we can chew at times. The point he was trying to make is that we should not just gloss over these things. At the turn of the 20th century, the American people experienced a turbulent change in the way they viewed the world. During the preceding Romantic Period, originating in Europe towards the end of the 18th century, literature and thought focused on hopeful longing, romantic optimism and an abundant use of flowery, complex language, both in the spoken and written word. Romantic poets such as John Keats and William Wordsworth used intricate metaphors and descriptive imagery to give vast, inspiring meaning to their works, which usually encompassed topics such as love, life and belonging. To describe the beauty of this time period, French poet Charles Baudelaire stated, "to say the word Romanticism is to say modern art -- that is, intimacy, spirituality,…

I like the quote "Expect to be called a stand patter, but don’t be a stand patter. Expect to be called a demagogue, but don’t be a demagogue," in the speech given by Calvin Coolidge at Massachusetts. It might have a different meaning but to me, it means not to be what people call us. This is a common problem in the world today. We live by what people call us; our every steps and breaths are determined by people.…

The past and the present can often be at a constant struggle within individuals and lead to moral confusion and conflict with each other. As the past teaches one thing and the present another, the concept of right or wrong is broken and the idea that both must be embraced is not realized. The novel, The Great Gatsby, by F.Scott Fitzgerald, utilizes numerous elements and literary devices to portray many different themes and topics. Using these, he portrays the struggle between the past and the present. “Don’t judge a book by it's cover” this is a saying I’m sure most people have heard, but how many of us really take it to heart? In the essay “Working at Wendy’s,” written by Joey Franklin, the truth of this statement is really brought to light. Anyone can find a time, just as Franklin did, when he or she felt as though they were being judged unfairly. I know there have been many times in my life where I have felt as though people have made poor presumptions about me, and where I have been guilty of the same offense. Joey Franklin describes his feelings and experiences while working at Wendy’s; I can easily relate his story to my own experiences of allowing others’ views to change the decisions I make, my assumptions of others, and my thoughts regarding myself,…
