Problem Solving Problem solving is when a process a responder helps the person find alternatives and solutions to the problem. When relating problem solving to a crisis, it involves actively listening for imprecise thinking on part of the person in crisis. Therefore, when problem solving, critical thinking is an important characteristic. This allows individuals to filter through which information is accurate, or relevant to crisis. Often, police officers respond to incident where the individuals affected by crime are in a crisis. It is important to understand techniques and approaches to crisis intervention in order to refocus an individuals thinking without sounding unempathetic.
Critical Incident Stress Debriefings (CISD) The CISD is a tool used to deal directly with the remaining effects of crisis. The goals of the CISD include “1) lessen the impact of the critical incident, 2) accelerate recovery from those events before the onset of damaging stress reactions, and 3) facilitating the return to a previous level of functioning” (Vecchi, 2009).
