Critical Incident Stress Debriefings (CISD) The CISD is a tool used to deal directly with the remaining effects of crisis. The goals of the CISD include “1) lessen the impact of the critical incident, 2) accelerate recovery from those events before the onset of damaging stress reactions, and 3) facilitating the return to a previous level of functioning” (Vecchi, 2009). This will allow individuals to express their concerns, as well as, analyzing the positive and negatives of what had occurred. Within the article it explains how the CISD “is provided one to 10 days post event… [and can] last one to three hours” (Vecchi, 2009). This can provide the optimum opportunity for first responders, as each individual copes at their own pace. Some maybe able to talk about the incident right after it happened, but others may take longer. The article further explains how the CISD is broken down into seven stages, which explains why it can take one to three hours to
