Critical Essay Reflection Assignment

While writing the critical essay reflection paper, I learned to identify the author’s thesis, and the purpose of the short story that I read to analyze. I then analyzed the structure of the passage by identifying all main ideas. The story was in another time therefore, the language used I had to consult a dictionary to understand material that was unfamiliar to me. I was able to practice one of my weaknesses which is outlining the work. I then practiced another skill that I want to strengthen, that is to write summaries. Moreover, there are several purposes to look for such as, to inform with factual material, to persuade with appeal to reason or emotions, to entertain, which is to affect people’s emotions. After determining which the author used then evaluate how the author has accomplished that purpose. I had to figure out if the material presented was clear, accurate or look for evidence. If the purpose was to entertain how emotions are affected: did it make me laugh, cry, or angry? Lastly, I learned about material organization, language and imagery that authors could use. Also, how the story related to other things I have read before. This assignment gave me more practice with summarizing stories. Another weakness for me is punctuation, being able to do these essays just furthers my abilities to learn techniques to help with reinforcement. As the saying goes “practice makes perfect”. I would settle for almost perfect. I also spent some time with trying to get the readers attention in the introduction. Furthermore, learning to describe my subject, being able to put my thoughts into words that are understandable.
