Oceania hides the outside world from citizens, disallowing them from making any comparisons between what they have and what they could have. The Ingsoc ideology is that “So long as [citizens] are not permitted to have standards of comparison they never even become aware that they are oppressed.”(Orwell 171). Taking away any knowledge of places that could be seen as more livable than Oceania leaves what citizens of Oceania are shown of the world, a skewed representation painting Oceania as a Utopia in contrast.
