Even if the baby has no chance of getting better, their obligation as a doctor is to maintain life. There is a difference though in trying to relieve the mothers pain and accidentally causing death. Medicine and pain relievers are a sensitive subject when it comes to pregnant women. At one end of the spectrum, you want the mothers to not be in pain, and on the other end, you don’t want to hurt the baby. It can be a hard and confusing thing to prescribe a pregnant woman medicine.
The tough decisions that are made are hard on everyone. Sometimes people forget that if this baby is okay and gets to go home, then that child may have problems that have to live with their whole life. Some parent’s concerns are that they may not know how to financially be stable for a child with special needs, or how to manage the life of someone with a child with a disability. This is a problem as sometimes the children who survived premature birth aren’t given the attention they need, because everyone is still trying to rescue ill babies, rather than supporting the ones who
