Critical Analysis - Masque of Red Death
Have you ever questioned or had the fear of death? No matter how afraid or confused about death you are, you will never be able to escape it. Whether royalty or high power of status, death is unescapable. Death has always been questioned or discussed throughout history and different religious leaders and individuals in the science field have all come to a conclusion that death cannot be avertible. In The Masque of the Red Death written by Edgar Allan Poe, we follow the story of a Prince trying to escape mortality, which is impossible because death is a natural cause and the cycle of life. I am here to prove why death is inevitable though “The Masque of the Red Death”.

The mentioning of the seven colored rooms and how they represent key points like “‘seven ages of men’, ‘seven days of the week’, ‘seven deadly sins’, and ‘seven parts of the day’” (Zimmerman 3) shows us the setup for death. Colors like Blue may be culturally related, for example, “In Iran, blue is the color of heaven and spirituality and is also used for mourning.” Or the color black, is “associated with death and mourning in many cultures. It is also associated with unhappiness, sexuality, formality, and sophistication.” (Lebanon Valley College) The east, and the west, shown in figure one on page four in “Allegoria and Clock Architecture in Poe’s the masque of the Red Death” also relates back to the main theme of death. In many cultures and religions the sunrise and sunset portray an importance for the followers. For example, in Islam one of the signs of the Day of Judgement is the sun rising from the west and setting in the east. “ 'Surely Allah causes the sun to rise from the east, so make it rise from the west. ‘Thus he who disbelieved was bewildered. And Allah guides not the unjust people." (Quran, 6:158) Or from the stories perspective the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, with night symbolizing death and the end of the
