In her novel Push, Sapphire uses multiple literary techniques to demonstrate how Precious creates a self-identity and a form of independence. As Precious learns to read, write, and create perceptions of her life and the world, she realizes that she is an individual that is unique and beautiful. Through Precious’s character, Sapphire reveals the emergence of a persons self-identity and newly discovered independence through a story of traumatic experiences.
From the beginning of the novel, Precious speaks about her negative personal view of herself, “I know who I am. I know who they say I am- vampire sucking the system’s blood. Ugly black grease to be wipe away, punish, kilt, changed, finded a job for.” (pg. 30) The literary technique of perspective is used to show how Precious not only views herself, but how she believes others view her. Even though she is present in class everyday, ”I always did like school, jus’ seem school never did like me,” (pg. 36) she has remained illiterate. Rain’s class, Precious gains confidence and her writing becomes more literate. By being in a comfortable setting and having a teacher who wants a better life for her, “You can do anything Precious but you gotta believe it” (pg.70), Precious starts to find her identity through encouragement. Ms. Rain helps Precious realize that if she respects herself, then she will be happy with herself through the literary technique of epistolary form, “ Precious you are not a dog. You are a wonderful young woman who is trying to make something of her life.” (pg.70) This literary technique builds an emotional connection between Precious and Ms. Rain. By knowing that someone cares for her, Precious can learn to find, love, and accept herself since others can.
