Soon the child hides his fearful face and tells his father that he has seen the Erlkönig , a goblin king, inviting him to share a life of richness and excellence. His father reassures his son that the apparition is merely a wisp of fog. Then the Erlkönig ’s daughters, all prepared to soothe him to sleep. The father relates to him that that they are only a mass of grey willows. Next, the Erlkönig tells the child that he loves him and, if he refuses to follow him readily, the King will take him away forcefully. Instantly, the child cries out that the Erlkönig has got hold of him. Speedily, the terrified father rides on with his moaning child but upon reaching his destination, sadly the child is dead.
Erlkönig immerses readers into a world of supernatural happenings. The temptation and seizure of a child by a spirit who represented death. It contains aspect of legend and tradition and combines the dimension of the real world and unreal. The father is posed as unable to hear and see the spirits with whom his child speaks.
The poem introduces dramatic dialogue as well as gives a sensuous portrayal of death which is likely to deliver to the tired senses of the living a certain relief and
