David Michael Letterman is an American television host, comedian, writer, producer, and actor. He hosts Late Show with David Letterman – American late night television talk show broadcast on CBS. David Letterman was ranked 45 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time in 1996. A guest star - Emma Watson is known as an English actress, model, and activist. This paper is going to analyze the transcript of David Letterman’s talk show with Emma Watson basing on ‘politeness’ theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1978). The study focuses on bald on record, positive politeness and negative politeness strategies.
Brown and Levinson’s ‘politeness’ theory introduces the notion of ‘face’ in order to demonstrate ‘politeness’. Face is defined as “the public self-image that every member” of society “wants to claim for himself” (Brown and Levinson 1987: 61). The utterance “Good to see you” (109) is used as the metaphorical entreaty stressing the Letterman’s high valuation of the Emma Watson's friendship.
