Lincoln on Leadership
Introduction
The book Lincoln on Leadership depicts the lessons and strategies utilized by Lincoln leading up to and throughout his presidency. Abraham Lincoln is the main character of this book. He serves as an incredible leader and example for those interested in being successful leaders in their organizations. The text analyzes his leadership style and qualities, and provides ways to employ these techniques in more modern times. “Why would today’s leaders be interested in Abraham Lincoln’s leadership style and philosophy? Because, by modern standards, Lincoln’s accomplishment would be regarded as no less than a miracle. There can be no doubt that Lincoln is the greatest leader this country, and perhaps this world, has yet known” (Phillips, 1992, p. 9). Donald Phillips has explored Lincoln’s leadership and has presented it in a way that has never been done before.

Lincoln understood how to work with others and led by example. He went to the battlefields to communicate with troops, generals, and even held open office hours. This gained much respect from his subordinates as he was approachable, yet also wanted to empower others to take the initiative. Lincoln was not trying to micromanage others, however he was not afraid to take control when others were complacent. In all leadership settings, honesty and integrity are needed and valued. Lincoln embodied this and always made sure to do what he thought was right. He acknowledged and thanked others for their contributions, and respectfully intervened when needed as well.
