Criteria For The Governor's Educator Essay

Improved Essays
As I read the list of criteria for the Governor’s Educator of the Year, my mind kept turning to one special colleague. Each bullet point on the list was met, but yet, he is so much more. He has not only been an example to each and every student in his classroom, he has influenced and inspired an entire staff! Mr. Michael Scott is the perfect choice for this honor. He is humble, kind, smart, and truly deserving. He is fully dedicated to Green Hills School and all that we are.
I can remember the first time I met Mike. He was full of life and ideas, and he brought a huge smile to my face. I liked him immediately! I knew he would make a huge impact in our school community and my personal life. I was right. I cannot picture Green Hills without him, nor could I picture my life without his friendship, guidance, and support. It has been quite a few years working with Mike, and not a thing has changed. If anything, his dedication to finding new ideas for his students and his tireless efforts to unite our Green Hills community have increased.

He has worked with our custodial staff in the summer and has an excellent rapport with every teacher and aide in the building. He is the first person to sign up to chaperone an event and the last person to close the door when it is over. Not to mention, he is the “life” of those events. His heart is always fully charged for whatever goal or mission needs to be accomplished! He brings an energy that is unrivaled. I have never been around him when he has not made everyone in his presence laugh or smile, and he brings that same life to his physical education classes. I have seen him in action. Students are energized and excited to participate and learn from him. He is organized, fair, and always strives to challenge his students. They work for him and walk away from his class feeling

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

I attended Governor’s School East in the summer of 2015. At Governor’s School I found some of the most accepting people with true intellectual curiosity and a zest for life. These people are what made me who I am today. Throughout all of high school I felt a loneness that hung so heavily I contemplated suicide multiple times. I had allowed myself to view the world through monochromatic glass so that all I ever saw was singularities.…

There are so many dimensions to counseling; guiding students with their academic path, creating an environment where they feel safe and supported, being a counselor and identifying risk factors. Beyond these dimensions however I believe the two most important characteristic when defining a counselor are adaptability and resilience. Academic counselors come across diverse populations and I believe there is no standard process when guiding students. The counselor should actively listen to the student and build a professional relationship in order to build trust. Equally important is the ability of the counselor to be resilient and to teach resilience.…
