Cristela Alonzo Character Analysis

I had never heard of “Cristela” before having to watch it for class. The first two episodes are quite comical and I was sorry to read on IMDB that the show only aired for one season before being canceled. An interesting fact about “Cristela” is that Cristela Alonzo, the star of the show, “is the first Latina to create, produce, write, and star in her own primetime comedy” (“All Jokes Aside,” 2014). Another fact about the show is that every single character is based off someone that Cristela Alonzo knows (Saraiya, 2014).

Latino identity is a reflection of one’s culture, with religion being a significant aspect. More often than not, religion and Latino family relationships are interconnected. Latino families, especially parents and grandparents, are fervent in their religious beliefs. Latinos will often instill Catholicism/Christianity as their main religion and teach their children to have pride in their culture. Religion can be a delicate system to handle, as it can commonly become a source of loving devotion to families or the source of breaking families apart.…

Most animated characters that are directed toward children tend to be very simple in design, they often offer colorful images that will easily grab the attention of the young adolescents that are watching the program. Cartoons are very influential to children because often characters are not identifiable as any race so it is easy for multiple kids to relate to them. However, some cartoon characters do have a race and it is sad to say that the entirety of their character is described by the race or ethnicity that they are representing. Due to the limited amount of cartoon characters with identifiable race, the characters that do have race are heavily influential to the children who are watching the program, and can easily influence the views…

A strong emphasis is placed on family as the major source of one’s identity and protection against the hardships of life. In the Hispanic culture, family comes first; this is exactly what the characters in the novel portray. You can see it best when Anita’s family sent Lucinda off to America for safety from El Jefe. Anita explains her feelings in her journal by saying, “I feel relief to hear that my sister will be safe, even though it means Lucinda has to go away. It’s like one of those operations where they save your life but take out some big part of you” (pg. 74). Inside of Anita’s thoughts, she shows the compassion she has for her sister.…
