Crisis Of Free Speech

Decent Essays
I agree with both articles The End of the First Amendment and There is No Crisis on Freedom Speech. It's hard to admit but censoring freedom of speech is a form of fascism. Berkeley shouldn't of had to pay thousands of dollars for security. Shouting down a speaker "known for making offensive and hurtful statements" is poisoning the well. It's wrong to attack someone for their beliefs if they haven't even heard them speak yet.
In addition to this, I agree with Shariatmadari when he states, "The crisis of free speech is a myth that gives cover to those who are either blind to their own attempts at social control, or want to shield them from critique". Freedom of speech is limited once everyone becomes afraid of sharing their thoughts

Freedom of speech has always been a topic of conversation on whether or not we really have it, or it’s portrayed like we do so the American people can be content. There is plenty of proof on the fact that our freedom of speech is actually being taken away from us. Even now as our generation is more open minded, it doesn’t mean that we allow for anyone to have what they think is right, heard. Then whenever we question that our right is being taken away, we are meant with critiques that we are just babies and Liberal snowflakes that don’t really know what it is to not have freedom of speech. There are cases like with what happened with the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, which was taking a stand by kneeling during the national anthem as a way to protest against…

The Hell You Say: Critical Analysis In this article originally published in the New Yorker, Kelefa Sanneh is giving us a very objective view of free speech and the two sides to it. He points out that on one side the liberals are arguing that there should be some kind of limit put on it so that people don’t get offended. On the other hand conservatives are arguing that free speech is one of our most fundamental rights and there should be no restrictions placed on it. He illustrates the arguments made by the two sides but fails to make an argument of his own and write a coherent essay.…

Having Free Speech is the basic right that Americans have, it is the ability to speaks one’s mind and ideas. Theres are many benefits to having the ability to project ideas without censorship. Caleb Yong author of “Does Freedom of Speech Include Hate Speech?” argues that the liberal justice has a special protection against the restriction of speech and expression, he calls it “Free Speech Principle” where it includes its “sensitivity to the distinction between coverage and protection (Yong)” that the speech should be monitored. Hate speech is too broad to single out the negative effect that it can have in any group. The main concept of this article includes the four categories that hate speech can be set in.…

The First Amendment was not created to harm someone else’s life as most of these newspaper articles try to do. I also believe that private institutions should be more responsible and sensitive to what they consider freedom of speech. I say this because if something goes wrong, the private institutions are most likely going to defend themselves by saying the First Amendment rights protects them as we’ve seen in the three previous examples that Fish brought up. A private institution should also be responsible for what they say because saying the wrong thing whether it’s offending or controversial, it can really ruin their reputation and can lead to hatred. The First Amendment is not going to stop people from hating or criticizing their institution.…

There are numerous countries in this world where this right “freedom of speech” is not been given and many suffers for the same cause. People ends up in prison, threatened with abuse, or in some case people even been “disappeared” for speaking against their government. In the article “Human Rights Activists in China Locked Up For Speaking Out” the writer asserts “The human rights movement in China is growing, but those who attempt to report on human rights violations or challenge government policies face serious risk of abuse”. Due to these kind of endangering government laws and its effects, people are afraid to justify themselves even when they are not in fault. In Iran, their harshest penalty i.e. death, is for someone who would speak against Prophet Mohaammed where in Kuwait, one will be imprisoned for up to five years or even permanent exile for…

Overtime the Supreme Court has carved out different categories of speech. The Courts have established some speech to be totally protected by the First Amendment, some speech to not be protected by the First Amendment, and some speech to be subjected to different tests and standards to determine whether or not they are protected by the First Amendment. There is sort of this set hierarchy of different classes of speech from that of which is most protected to that of which is least protected. Speech that is subject to the prohibition without violating the First Amendment is speech that is deemed to be absolutely lacking in any type of value. Basically, the Courts have determined that some speech is just valueless and contributes nothing to our…

I’m tired of everyone exclaiming that they have a right to freedom of speech. She has an opinion. He has an opinion. And their only ammunition is that they have right to freedom of speech, so they continue to carry on with their foolishness. I wished that we were a communist nation that had strict laws that prevented citizens from expressing their feelings about social, political, racial and even sexual dilemmas that one may face daily.…

The topic I have chosen is the evolution of free speech in America, specifically focusing on protected speech versus hate speech. Civil rights, especially the right of expression, is one that has always fascinated me, but also something that I would like to learn more about. Hate speech is something that has been brought to the forefront of discourse at the University of Minnesota in recent weeks, and I thought it would be interesting to take a purely analytic report about this topic. I am concerned about this topic mainly because of its inherently controversial nature. Hate speech is something that obviously hurt and negatively affects people, and as such I believe many sources that are not academic would be biased.…

Many people think that we should throw the first amendment away because of hate speech. All laws should stay the same and protect all speech because the government would have to much power over what we see, the government might imprison many people that have opposing opinion than others, and if all speech were to be banned so would people's beliefs ; therefore all laws need to be kept the same. Our media would be highly censored if we were to change the laws. We would be kept in the dark about what’s truly going on.…

In the article " Hate speech and the first amendment debating the 'Mighty' constitutional opposites" (para 2) What this shows is by limited what others say it's taking away their right to say what they want and the listeners right to fight back with their own words. Another quote is "As a society, we seem to have forgotten that free speech is central to our dignity as human beings as well as to intellectual and material progress," ( "Free speech is central to our dignity as humans para 3) In addition to what was said before limiting this freedom would not be a good thing because it is taking away not just the people who create hate crimes and speeches but everybody's. As well as that, many people would be in jail just by saying their opinion even if it is bad.…

Freedom of speech is one of the defining features of America, and Trump’s presidency has generated a toxic environment for those who disagree with each other. Numerous college campuses have begun restricting freedom of speech to lessen conflict, costing some students the right to pray or peacefully promote their beliefs (Maloney Jr. 5). Most recently, protesters at Middlebury College in Vermont prevented Charles Murray, a conservative political scientist, from speaking and injured a professor who was escorting him off the campus (Krantz 2). The violent backlash at Middlebury isn’t isolated to this campus, unfortunately, and similar incidents have caused students to feel the need to “‘shut up’ in class out of fear of being targeted for harboring inappropriate views” (Downs 3). College legislators are confronted with the challenge of maintaining freedom of speech while protecting the emotional, ideological, and physical safety of their students.…

Should there be a limit for individual expression or guidelines to public opinions? Freedom of speech has been a controversial topic for many years, it was created when democracy was established to protect the people and individual rights. Since then it has become more of an issue in modern society due to the constant action of restriction on everyday speech. It has been argued that limiting the right to express a person’s opinion could eventually cause more harm than good. Other people might disagree and argue that a set of limitations could be a positive action to eliminate the negative and violent outcomes freedom of speech creates.…
