Crisis Management Personal Statement

The University of Central Florida has provided me with many opportunities during my undergraduate experience. I have gained knowledge of crisis management, the power of mentorship, appreciate the effectiveness of a positive attitude and developed the desire to learn inside and outside of the classroom setting. I have been able to grow as a leader in Housing and Residence Life, Greek Life and Victim Services. These departments have taught me to be a better leader, but have also given me the skills to prepare for a Masters level education and to succeed as a student who has a love and appreciation for learning. As I move forward into my professional career, my goal would be to work for a department similar to Victim Services, working with …show more content…
This department, with the help of supervisors and mentors, has molded me as a student leader by sharing their knowledge and providing leadership opportunities to me in multiple different areas in the department. A component of the department is focused on Social Justice and Resident Education. I was selected to serve as the first Resident Assistant to mentor the students taking part in the Social Justice and Gender Inclusive Housing Living Learning Community. Through this experience, I have been able to further about the inner workings of how Living Learning Communities are developed. In addition, I was able to contribute thoughts and ideas to help create a list of important and relevant social justice topics for monthly curriculum, in which students could relate to on the university campus. Now that the community is established, I am positioned to develop relationships with my students to discuss the importance of social justice at our university and in society as a …show more content…
As an Intern for Green Dot UCF and as a Resident Assistant, I was able to act as a mentor for my peers and residents in the community. One part of my internship is to help facilitate monthly six hour Green Dot trainings for students. Representing Green Dot, among other organizations on campus, people start to recognize me as a leader on campus and I was then able to share what I know with people in a more casual setting. Along with Green Dot and as a Resident Assistant, I have been able to mentor my residents and watch them grow as they take on new challenges in life, such as getting involved in Greek Life and joining different Registered Student Organizations around campus. It is always refreshing and heartwarming to see what amazing people they have become as they continue on their journey after they have lived on my floor. One of the most amazing experiences has been my resident serving as my NRHH Representative In-Training, where he learned everything about my position as the Vice President and voting representative for the Pegasus Chapter and took on the role the year after during elections. I am so proud to see him take on that role, get involved and want to mentor students as

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

Most of the students did not feel like a member of mainstream or were not sure where they fit in. It is important to understand and learn about the African American community and their history. We need to learn how to change our attitudes towards different cultures and become open minded about other cultures. Professor Alexis asked, “ How can we as a society change on how we treat and view African Americans/ minorities?” because African Americans have a long history of not being treated equally and fair how can we make it right? I left with great knowledge on the African American community and left empowered by the words, stories, and knowledge shared by professor Alexis and the students.…

The club is compromised of an open-minded, diverse collaboration of youth who diligently fight for racial equality. Ethnic tension has always been extremely prevalent at my school--students often choose to segregate themselves by hues of skin pigmentation. At the root of this tension is restless silence on the most controversial topics, and thus Black Student Union was created to spark intelligent dialogue and debate on racial issues. Growth flourishes at every meeting, newfound respect and comprehension generated between students of vastly divergent backgrounds. I channel my pride in my black heritage into the empowerment of local black students and education on cross-racial understanding that takes place at BSU.…

I recall how my Resident Assistant and my Graduate Residence Director made a difference in my life, and I am grateful for them. In turn, it is essential for me to be available to residents by mediating problems and empowering them through the best four years of their lives. While responding to noise complaints and lockouts for my fellow residents while on duty at two in the morning is not my idea of a fun night, deep down I knew I was helping someone. During my junior year, I quickly came to the realization that I enjoyed what I was doing and wanted to continue being involved in student affairs even after I graduated with my bachelors. The two in the morning calls, roommate mediation sessions, and monitoring budgets for programs became more significant in my life.…

My overarching goal is to build AOII’s community both within the chapter and within Tufts’ community. I want to be able to help the communities I become a part of in order for myself and those communities to grow and become more well-rounded. In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…
