A loved one, killed. This is many people’s worst nightmare. The loved ones of the mentally ill are in constant worry of this, knowing that the person they love could suffer from a sudden psychotic breakdown and put their lives at risk without realizing it. The fact that the mentally ill cannot control themselves and may engage in criminal activity as a result has led a struggle for police departments as people who are unaware of their actions - essentially innocent people - are killed. Through an effective argument that utilizes multiple appeals, Pete Earley suggests the necessity of special police forces to handle mentally ill suspects.…
The Memphis Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is an innovative police based first responder program that has become nationally known as the "Memphis Model" of pre-arrest jail diversion for those in a mental illness crisis. This program provides law enforcement based crisis intervention training for helping those individuals with mental illness. Involvement in CIT is voluntary and found in the patrol division of the police department. Also, CIT works in partnership with those in mental health care to provide a system of services that are friendly to the individuals with mental illness, family members, and the police officers. "CIT has a track record of safe intervention with persons experiencing a mental health crisis event.…

Some agencies have protocols in place for individuals with mental health…
Working in the Human Service field and focusing on the criminal justice and forensic side opens up the opportunity to advocate for individuals who have been involved in our judicial system. “These practitioners are often tasked with coordinating and providing a diverse array of assistance, referral, advocacy, intervention, and other forms of support and services for diverse populations of individuals involved in the criminal justice system who are often impacted by mental illness.” (Brown, J. & Cich, J. (2017,…
The treatment of people with mental illnesses and handicaps has been a long lasting problem because of the misunderstandings of police, mental hospitals, and society. Many documentaries and movies have been made to show the lives lead in mental hospitals and institutions. News reports have talked about police shooting suspects who have been mentally ill. Most of these events could have been avoided if people could try and learn about mental illnesses, instead of hiding them away from the rest of the world. Just because they are physically or mentally different from the norm, society expects them to be maintained at an institution like dogs in a dog pound.…
However, in situations where injury or use of lethal force is being used it can bring a lot of media attention and it is important to put these stories into perspective and understand that in BC and in Canada, police rarely use deadly force with anyone. A study by Rick Parent, looked at municipal police shootings over a 15-year time period between 1980 and 1994, involving a lot of police contacts. In the study, a total of 15 shoots, and another 38 situations involving lethal threats were resolved successful, although a disproportionate number of these incidents involve people with mental illness (1998). Of the 15 shootings, five people involved had histories with the mental health system and eight showed signs of mental illness that demonstrated…
We are here to help a crisis victim through whatever deplorable event that they might have experienced. We need to have a capacity for listening. We need to know when to let the client vent and when we should step in and gather information. We also need to recognize when to seek information without intrusion or interfering with the victim’s process. We need to have awareness of trauma indicators.…
Observing and assessing mental health needs of an individual provides adequate information on proper care for the person, and serves as the first element in observing changes in one’s behavior. Furthermore, the nurse must be competent in assessment skills so the outcome can be reported immediately if there is a threat to safety. Safety is a major concern when serving a mentally ill patient. Learning how to effectively communicate with a patient not only establishes rapport, but builds a trustworthy relationship.…

It is important for the individual officer to know what strategies and coping mechanisms are going to work specifically for him or herself. The first personal coping strategy is the “development of a dependable support system,” (Waters & Ussery, 2007). This means that officers need to work on having a positive support system both at the station and home. The use of communication and means of ventilating when needed are two more strategies that will benefit an officers overall mental health. If an officer is able to communicate that he or she needs services to help cope with stressors or any other mental health related issue, help will be provided to them, preventing the unhealthy coping…
In that case, with the obstacles the police faces when dealing with mental illness situations, there are two serious issues appears from the current state of criminalization with someone having a mental illness and injury or death as a result of their contact with the police. As noted, officers are in the position to be first responders to serious mental health emergencies; police intervention accounts for a significant amount of referrals into care estimates of 15-40% of the mentally disordered is currently in jails and prisons (Adelman, 2003). Majority of arrest of mentally ill people are for non-serious crimes such as minor theft, noise or disruptions complaints, failure to appear in court following other charges that was either directly or indirectly related to their illness. A study by Rogers, suggest that lack of advance knowledge of mental illness was a contributing factor to arrest (1990). As a result, an arrest was often the only step available for officers in situation where individuals were not sufficiently disturbed too be accepted by hospitals but were too public in their deviance to be ignored.…
A crisis takes a time to build up and therefore a helper has the time to intervene before the worst has occurred. He should take care of a number of factors, early warning signs, verbal and non-verbal signals in order to prevent a crisis situation. (Saskatchewan Polytechnic, 2016. Pg. 35). If a person is with a well-developed thought out self-control plan, it becomes very easy to intervene in a hostile situation and, successfully, deal with an impulsive and aggressive individual.…
At least 1 in 4 fatal police encounters end the life of a person that has a severe mental illness in official and unofficial accounts. If this continues, the chance of being killed during a police encounter is 16 times higher for those who have untreated mental illness rather than those other civilians who are stopped by officers. On the other hand, people with mental illnesses killed law enforcement officers at a rate of 5.5 times more than the rest of the population back in 1998. In 1980, researchers began recording direct observations about how police officers handled mentally disordered people in a large northern city and how these interactions differed from relations with people who were not mentally disordered.…
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a film based within a mental institution that portrays the ineffectiveness of the institution. Using peer-reviewed, empirical research, this paper connects the film to the process of increasing the efficacy of mental health institutions. The findings of the research include how to perpetuate better nurse-patient communication. This can be done by nurses having more positive communication with their patients, and also having sufficient communication with their patients during drug searches. Other research looked at treatment within mental health institutions.…
Crises are something which cannot be avoided throughout the course of an individual’s lifetime. It is associated with life changes and the transition from childhood to adulthood.
