Everyone experiences trauma differently which can cause a spectrum of reactions to traumatic events. (For each case study, please classify which type of response is experienced: behavioral, physical, spiritual, emotional, or cognitive, response).

A Recently, Jillian returned from a long weekend trip with her college friends. When she arrived home, she noticed that the door to her apartment was slightly cracked open. She knew that she had locked her door, but thought maybe she didn't close it tightly. Once inside, she realized that her patio glass was shattered and many of her belongings were missing. She can listen to her favorite podcast or talk radio without the normal distractions if her family was in the car. One morning on her way to work, she was in stopped traffic on the freeway and the vehicle traveling in the same lane behind her, hit the back of her car going 20 miles per hour pushing her car into the car in front of her and totaling both. The driver who created the pile up, admittedly was on his cell phone. Andrea had to be cut out of her car by the fire department and rushed to a local hospital with a painful back injury which caused her to take a leave of absence from work in order to recover physically. During the first few months after the accident, she refused to ride in a vehicle and believed that all cars and drivers are unsafe and vowed that she would never drive again. Since that time, she has had no other choice than to drive herself back and forth to work. However, she excessively checks her rear view mirror, always feels that cars are crossing into her lane, and refuses to turn on the radio so she is not distracted since all other drivers are …show more content…
Jenny has always been an active Christian and member of the local Methodist church. After the news of Evelyn's disease, Jenny reached out to her pastor and church family to create a prayer chain in hopes God would heal her daughter. She prayed every chance she had and moved her daughter into her home in order to personally care for her. After a few months, Evelyn seemed to be more alert and peaceful and Jenny knew that the prayers were working and God was healing her daughter. Then a turn for the worse happened and Evelyn was hospitalized and passed two days later. Jenny was devastated and has severe depression and loneliness and has not returned to church. She feels abandoned by God, which has in turn caused a loss of faith. ANSWER: Spiritual Response – Death forces us all to confront our spirituality and question our beliefs. In Jenny’s case, she was confident in belief system and that being an active part of her church and a devout Christian would trump her daughter’s illness in the eyes of God, however, that belief created a deep spiritual crisis. In a grieving situation such as this, the most difficult question asked is “why”? The loss of Evelyn challenged Jenny’s beliefs and it is difficult for her to reconstitute her faith in something that allowed her daughter to
