Crisis Center Observation

Living in the world today, the population rates are constantly rising, and so the world is endlessly being filled with millions and millions of people. Every individual person was born with their own purpose in life. Some individuals discover their purpose early on in life, and others may or may not discover theirs. The Deaf Smith County Crisis Center is a place that advocates for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and anyone else in need. I had the opportunity to complete my ten hours of volunteer work at the Deaf Smith County Crisis Center. I was glad that I got to meet Mrs. Mary Gamboa and Mrs. Carol Holivison. Mrs. Carol is head of the center, and she oversees everything that happens. Mrs. Gamboa hands all the sexual assault …show more content…
I was first supposed to separate the color of the folders because each color is for a particular situation. For instance, the red folders where used for domestic violence. Then, I was to take each color section and put them in alphabetical order, and I was to sort them by year as well. This task was not difficult at all, and plus they update their filing cabinets frequently. I just happened to come in at a time when they needed to reorganize them. My second task was to open up boxes, that were recently donated, and put up the items in the appropriate spot. Just by looking at the building you would never know how big it was, but it is huge and each room is also huge. I am still not completely sure how many rooms the building has because again everything is confidential, and I couldn’t just wonder the building. I was allowed in the areas were the donated stuff was stored. They had a room for kids toys and activities, there were three rooms mixed with adult, children, and teens clothing, a room for dishes and other household items, a room for babies’ needs, and so much more rooms full of …show more content…
I thought how am I supposed to complete ten hours of volunteering, but it was not as hard as I thought it was. I truthfully enjoyed this experience, and I have never done nothing like this before in my life. Meeting the ladies that work there was awesome too. They are truly sweet, and they take their jobs very seriously. After, I completed my hours I got to sit down with both of them, and talk to them about what they do there, and why it was important to them. They even tried telling me about the starfish story, and it’s even the front logo on their entrance door. I genuinely loved going and being there, and I even offered to come volunteer any other time. I know they are busy ladies, and they are constantly getting donations, and don’t have much time to organize or put stuff up. When I was there it made, me realize how lucky I really am, and how others are not so much. The crisis center has clients, who they have helped for years and years, and they still need help. I saw a client bring in her children’s clothes (that she got there) that didn’t fit any more to exchange it for some that did. It is extremely sad to think about these individuals and the situation they go through. I don’t even know how people like Mary and Carol, can stomach the stuff they see and

While volunteering through the Catholic Charities group, I got to experience both the Sanitation handout room at the Dorothy Day center as well as work in the prep kitchen at the faculty warehouse. While volunteering in the Day center we were placed in a back room that had two service counters on opposite sides of the room. Those counters opened into the bunk rooms of the center and were organized by gender, sorting the women onto one side and all the men on the other. Between the bunk rooms our room had shelves of supplies and handouts that the clients could request. Some of the supplies that we had were personal items such as deodorant, shampoo, body wash, lotion, etc.…

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

I have not seen her for a long time, but I remember her appreciation.…

In attempt to develop range in my observation of support groups, I once again found myself returning to an old stomping ground. Throughout my years in high school, I dedicated several hours a week to my local church in a growth group for high school girls. Although I currently experience mixed emotions with religion, I recalled how influential it was during my teenaged years to have such support, convincing me to return to observe a group to identify ways in why it was so helpful for me during difficult moments in my life. Luckily, my previous growth group leader was still leading groups and graciously accepted my request to be a guest that following week. Meeting once a week, the purpose of these groups was to discuss the Bible and life issues, but based on personal experience, these groups offered much more than a few life lectures.…
