Lindsey RamirezProfessor CookENG091June 14, 2018Rough Draft I have struggled with trying to find the right careers for me. Of course, there is plenty to choose from, but I concluded I wanted to study something to do with the human brain. I did my research and found both psychology and criminology caught my eye. I thought both fields were different from each other; Psychology Is the study of human brain and behavior while criminology is the study of crime and criminals. I realized they are actually alike in many factors like their human brain studies, their aid to the community, and interesting components. Furthermore, to clarify, Psychology and criminology have similar studies, they basically study the same thing: human brain and behavior.

The salacious nature of the case, the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator, simultaneously mesmerized and repulsed the public, and attracted intense media coverage. Research Paper Rough Draft There are many biological theories in criminology that attempt to explain behaviors that contrast with society’s expectations; these theories are within a paradigm known as positivism. The theory of positivism, asserting that criminal behavior is beyond ones’ control, can be used to explain why that individual committed the crime, as opposed to the crime being due to a rational choice made. Serial Killers: Behind the Mind In order to solve murders and catch killers there has to be some research behind what makes them commit terrible acts. Without the research we have today criminal profilers and detectives would have a much harder job of determining the criminal’s next move or where they are hiding out from the police. People like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacey, or Jeffery Dahmer could have claimed more victims if it weren’t for the research behind the criminal mind.…

Although, the strong link between sadistic crime and neuropsychology is apparent, damage to specific areas of the brain are not the only possible causes of aggression/violence. In my current employment, I am responsible for developing cooking appliances that resonate with different groups of people. Psychology is a science that is unprecise, being an art more than a science (H. Tato, personal communication, July 9, 2016). Dr. Tato explained that profiling is a method for trying to determine an offender’s personality and demographic characteristics. Likewise, market segmentation is a method to help determine the drivers for consumer purchases.…

Summary Criminology studies the reasoning and factors as to why individuals engage in criminal activities. In classical criminology, social philosophers Cesare Beccaria and Jeremy Bentham developed a theory of crime that criminologist and theorist still use today (Akers 2017). In classical criminology, an individual commits a crime by making a rational decision. That decision is based off of whether the benefits that one might receive by offending outweighs the consequences such as being caught and cited or sentenced. Individuals base their decision to offend or not offend on what they have seen others suffer, their knowledge of what consequences they may endure and their own personal experiences.…

There are many different ways of approaching criminology. A couple of the main perspectives include sociological, psychological, and theological theories. First lets look at the psychological perspective. The psychological perspective looks at something that not many other perspectives do, it looks at both the offender and victim as individuals. It studies the underlying processes of human thinking and behavior in order to understand (and in turn deter) crime.…
