Adults in the Making, or more commonly referred to as AIM, is a program that is family oriented to help prevent youths from turning to a drug or alcohol induced lifestyle, and to help parents develop the tools needed in order to recognize and help prevent risky adolescent delinquency. The way that AIM does this is through weekly meetings over a six week course. The initial program had a target audience of African American youths and their families. The age group was those who were in the last two years of their high school careers, typically 16-18 years of age. Teaching young adults how to self-regulate in a way that wasn’t harmful. Some of these tips include Setting goals, problem solving, and developing a greater interest in their education and/or career (CrimeSolutions). Each session had a joint parent-child workshop as well as individual workshops. The adults would learn how to be the support system that their child needs and the adolescents would learn tools to help them overcome obstacles like racial discrimination and developing proper self-care.
The program has been deemed as a success due to multiple reasons. When there was a high level of risk regarding alcohol and substance abuse, the program saw a decrease of risky participation from the participants. “The program appeared to have stronger effects on AIM participants who had high contextual risk factors.” (Crime Solutions). Starting out in a small number of highly qualified areas, i.e, those who have a large amount of high risk behavior being reported, would be the best test areas to determine if there would be any amount of change. If these initial tests prove to be a success then it can be implemented in a larger area. The concern would be the initial $100 deposit that each family had to make for the class. If the targeted audience is living below the poverty line, it may not be feasible for the family to make that large of a monetary payment.
