The criminalizing of marijuana use in the United States affects all of us, whether we realize it or not. The casual users of marijuana are still being sentenced to prison, taking the cell of a violent criminal. For decades the United States has decided that marijuana is an evil drug that must be illegal to buy, sell, grow, or partake in. This plant has negative consequences for the people that like the way it makes them feel, or try to make a profit by supplying it to consumers. What is so bad about this plant that makes it illegal? The criminal system is a money maker for the United States government; they should be severely punishing the violent criminals, and lessening the penalty for marijuana “crimes”.
Marijuana’s effects are very similar to that of alcohol, yet alcohol is still legal to consume if one is not driving and inebriated. This is an accurate statement especially within our youth, because they feel that if they get away with one illegal action, they might as well try out other illegal things too.
