In 1896 Sir Edward Richard Henry found a system to classify fingerprints. In 1897 DNA could be used to find or eliminate suspects from the case. Berkeley began an academic department for criminalistics and criminology and in the 1930’s more colleges began to offer criminalistics degrees.

They spend time at crime scenes and in crime labs collecting, analyzing and testing evidence. Sometime they spend their time during the trial in court to give testimonies and presentations to the jury.
To become a criminalist, you must attend a 4-year program and complete a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. You must complete 24 semester hours of math, biology or chemistry, and after college you must receive professional certification. Loras college, The University of Iowa and Iowa Lakes Community College are a few of the many colleges that offer this major. During your career you may be required to take additional classes. Other careers you can choose in this major include, forensics, investigation and phycology.
Criminalists face many dangers in the work place because they work with blood, other bodily fluids and chemicals. Criminalists who work in the field have a higher danger of bacteria and other disease. Lab techs work with chemicals that may be dangerous or toxic if handled improperly. They may be caused emotional stress from the crime scene or evidence found at the scene. To be advanced to the level 1B career you must have 1 year or more of experience in criminalistics. Advancement in levels 2-4 you may need other classes or requirements but you also have to have more years of experience. Sometimes a master’s degree in any of the levels can substitute for two years of experience.
Criminalists must have good communication skills so that they can convey information to others in a way that they can understand it. They must be skilled in science in math and be able to use it to help them solve problems. They must have active listen skills and be able to pick out key pieces of information. The last but most important is they need to be able to pick up new things quickly and piece the bits of evidence together
Reflecting back to my worksheets I found my skills are explaining things to others, offering to help when needed and reading and following instructions. I think that all of these fit me because people always come to me when they don’t understand and I am always willing to help and explain things to them. One of the values on my sheet is the opportunity to learn and develop new skills, this is exactly like me because I enjoy to learn about new things.
