1) Briefly summarize the research in one of the articles/chapters listed below or from another ethnographic work. In this summary paragraph(s), you need to include the following information: (a) characteristics of the subjects (including how many there were, and any demographic characteristics of them mentioned in the research); (b) the method(s) used by the researcher(s) to locate the subjects; (c) the method(s) used to elicit information from them: and (d) a summary of the key findings.
This research by Dabney (1995) looked at deviant behavior involving theft among hospital nurses. …show more content…
Many of these nurses use these different techniques to explain the reasons they stole. Many used denial of injury, since no person was physically hurt from stealing a few items occasionally. The denial of responsibility method was used for stealing that became a workplace norm. As a result, many nurses conformed to these norms to fit into the group. This type of behavior seemed to be a common industry practice. Differential association theory can be used to help explain their behavior (Sutherland, 2014). Since this theory focuses on how deviant behavior is learned through the interaction with others. These participants would imitate the same deviant behavior they learned from their colleagues. When a person sees people around them taking part of a certain criminal act and it is not directly followed by a consequence, the behavior that is being learned is that stealing can help with any of their immediate needs. After a while, it becomes a subculture norm in the workplace. Rational choice perspective could also be applied to understand the choices that where made (Cornish & Clarke, 2014). This theory explains the decisions made in order to maximize a person’s benefit while trying to minimize their loss. The nurses would rationalize their situation by trying to come up with excuses for their actions. They admitted to taking whatever steps necessary in order to achieve their …show more content…
