As Harr and Hess (2009) discuss, those in this profession need to be in good physical condition everyday for their safety. It is harder for agencies to start off trying to get a new officer in good shape, so the best person for this job would be someone who already shows to be in good condition and also does not smoke. They will also use good manners by being on time, or early, to their scheduled interview. When being talked to or with, they show that they are listening and that they respect what the other person is saying. If they are obviously being sidetracked, not paying attention, interrupting, or day dreaming, they are showing a lack of respect and in turn giving off a bad first impression. Paying attention to details about each candidate is essential because not only are they a direct representative of our department, but they also hold the safety of the community in their hands. Like most other jobs, we have specific criteria that the individual must fit and also look for certain qualities that they have that might make them good candidates for the job. These qualities are especially significant to have and to look for since criminal justice professionals are typically held to a much higher standard than most people. We are not necessarily looking for someone who has been employed in this field before. In fact, it is sometimes more beneficial for them to have little or no experience in the criminal justice field at all. Having this blank slate to work with makes it much easier for us to teach them our specific department’s rules and ways without them having a predisposition about what is right or wrong according to their prior job and that department’s ways. On the other hand, it says a lot about a person if they have already had a job in any type of security work. This shows that they were trusted with the safety of others by another employer and that they have the ability to work under high stress situations (Harr & Hess,
