The term ‘Sociopath’ is a word that has many definitions tied to it, these definitions have been complicated many times by the media. Looking at sociopaths through the perspective of criminological theories of deviance, like the ‘social constructionism theory’ is very crucial. When Criminal Justice professionals are dealing with sociopaths, and also with psychopaths, or even people who have deviant psychiatric disorder; Criminal Justice officials must also work with those who diagnose these people to be “sociopaths” or anything of that region. This is seen from a criminology point of view. Using a psychological perspective, the understanding of sociopaths and psychopathy becomes more intricate when it comes to topics such as nature vs. nurture. In lots of cases, psychologists and criminology professionals work together. In lots of cases of sociopathy, it’s common that the deviant person will be inspected and looked at in the light of biological, psychological, and social aspects of sociopathic behavior. There are many different things that go into determining if one is a sociopath or if they are a psychopath. This conjoining of point of views is endorsed in a milieu in which law enforcement, criminal justice professionals, and psychologists work intensively with each other. This is to ensure that they establish the best practices for dealing with sociopathic individuals. “Typically, serial killers have a desire to dominate others. Their targets usually are women and children, whom they can overpower. The murders often are accompanied by sexual assaults; if the defendants are caught, they frequently are found awash in pornography” (Gest, 1984). A handful of the most severe crimes recorded have been committed by this personality- type. “Serial killers with the nature of their crimes cross both categories due to the violence associated with the crimes, the recidivism of the crimes, and the deviant nature of most serial killers even though the particular deviance varies per killer” (Hall, 2013). Although with more recent studies, sociopaths are not a new phenomenon. Using methods from studies like sociology and psychology, and even criminology have helped advance our knowledge with the people of society, and we may be better to understand what motivates these people to behave in anti-social ways through “differential association theory.” Basically, “A sociopath sees the world only in terms of superficial appearances. The meaning of any thing comes not from what it is, but what reaction it gets from others. A classic trait of a sociopathic/narcissistic personality is that they don’t perceive other humans as people” (Myth, 2011).
