Personal Narrative: My Interest In Criminal Justice

Improved Essays
I have acquired an interest in criminal justice for some time now. I have recently gone through some experiences that have opened my eyes to the many hypocrisies that are ingrained into the criminal justice system. As a child and up until now, I have always thought that the courts were just and law enforcement officers stood for something more, that is not the case to me. I see a lot of corruption and a lot of nonsense, Especially towards minorities. Anyway, before my disinterest in corrections, I interviewed my father and my brother who are Correctional Officers for the state of California. My father worked for the Department of Corrections for 26 years, he recently retired this year. I had asked him if he enjoyed it, He said that he had enjoyed his career and the pay was very rewarding to him. He had worked his whole 26 years at Tehachapi State Prison (CCI) . My dad preferred to work on the higher level yards with the more dangerous inmates. He didn 't really enjoy working the lower yards because he didn 't like how they had so much freedom and you never know what the inmates are up to. My dad has seen a change in the Corrections system since he started working there in the late 80’s to now, back then was more hands on and now it is more political with less …show more content…
I believe that, we all go through different experiences. For example, my mom and dad gave me everything I have ever wanted. They put me through private school, they support me in college and always encourage me to do my best, best parents I could ever ask for. What about the kid at home that has a dad who encourages gangs and drugs, and a mom who is an alcoholic. WHAT ABOUT HIM? HE IS SET UP FOR FAILURE. IM SUPPOSED TO LOOK DOWN ON HIM JUST BECAUSE HIS LIFE EXPERIENCES WERE DIFFERENT THAN MINE? THAT IS ALL HE KNOWS. WHAT IF MY DAD WAS A DOPE DEALER? WHAT IF I GREW UP IN A GANG INFESTED NEIGHBORHOOD? WOULD I STILL BE

When considering the changes the American prison system has undergone, do you think that the system has reached a point where it’s healthy for inmates and guards? When reading the second part of New Jack, going over the history of the prison system in America really struck me. The chapter “Scrap Heap” covers all the history of Sing Sing prison, but it also covers some basics about how prison was in general across America. It’s gut-wrenching to read about the conditions over time.…

The equipment is dilapidated as well as few compared to the constantly increasing number of inmates who are convicted daily by the justice system. The description paints a negative picture to the reader who has never had the opportunity to visit the facility. The facility is also understaffed since the number of trained personnel turnover is high compared to the other facility across the country. The experienced staff members are constantly transferred to other places, and this creates a crisis within the institution. When new guards are assigned to the correctional facility, they are inducted to the workplace by their colleagues who themselves have only spent only a few days in the institution, and this leaves many pitfalls in enforcing the policies of the facility.…

It is 7:23 a.m. on a Thursday morning, the pass allowing tardiness to first hour is tucked away in my tattered blue backpack. I sit in my car gazing at the quiet building. I have seven minutes to make it up the staircase, adorned with two lamp posts. I, along with many others, have visited Morgan Federal, the bank across the street, countless times and never realized just what was in the vicinity. A friend who works next door in the courthouse suggested I profile this place and gave the directions: “It’s in the old jail,” as if that was a common reference automatically understood.…

Throughout the Fall 2016 semester, I visited several different courts uptown for my American Criminal Courts class. When I saw this assignment on the syllabus, I was very eager to complete it because I wanted expand my knowledge in the court system and how it works. I had previously observed in a courtroom for my Civics and Economics class in high school, but it was very basic. I went to the courthouse afterhours and completed a mock trial with other peers. Even though it was basic, I still had a lot of fun pretending I was on a jury and seeing the simple set up of a trial.…

With the U.S. having the highest incarceration rates in the world, Americans are slowly inching towards realizing the effects of this and beginning to think about prison reform. Before any solid, concrete change is to occur, we need to be able to look at the different aspects of the criminal justice system which affects every single person in this country. We must be able to look at what leads up to someone being incarcerated (early life, family ties, social position), the legal proceedings and interactions with law enforcement. We need to be able to look at how people are being sentenced, and what “correctional” really means when it comes to using the term “correctional facilities”. We also need to look at why we have such high recidivism…

This is a true story about the time I got in trouble for doing something that would have marked my record with a felony and got me put in a juvenile detention center for 3-6 months. I'm in a room with my mom, sister, and a officer who is telling me what I did and the consequences for my actions. I'm sitting there taking it all in and making sure I show him how regretful I am for doing what I did. When I sat down with my mom and sister the officer asked me what happened so i told him and he explained what could happen to me. At the moment he was explaining my situation I was nervous and scared even though i was going to accept the consequences of my actions.…

Hiring individuals who served time in prison is not ultimately in the best interests of organization and the society. Hiring people with criminal records can harm the organization and its members. In 2009 approximately 18 percent of arrests were provided for property crimes including burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, vandalism, stolen property, forgery and counterfeiting, fraud and embezzlement. Nearly 12 percent of these people were arrested for drug offenses including production, distribution or use of controlled substances. Other offenses include drunkenness, prostitution, vagrancy, driving under the influence, weapons violations, and other issues (Solomon).…

Every day, assaults, riots, rapes and murders are a fact of life in our nation’s prisons. In my opinion, sometimes our correctional system seems to cause more problems than assistance to the society. The system is very expensive, overcrowded, and inefficient in certain aspects. One of the problems The United States Correctional System faces today is prison violence. Violence is not random or mindless but steamed from identifiable conflicts between inmates that had escalated due to the lack of positive coping skills and could be avoided with more counseling accessibility.…
