Many individuals enter the criminal justice field for reasons of protecting their love ones or for the thrill of it. My reason was because I had completed 4 years working inside of the jail facility in this great city of Memphis. I did not put much thought into it at first until one of my co-workers dared me to return to school. When I decided to go back, I figured why not learn a little more about where I work and the inmates that keep this facility alive. Consequently, I felt that I did not learn much about this place, other than working hands on. I received my Associates Degree online and did not want to go back after that. However, 9 years later someone else challenged me to complete my Bachelor’s degree. Here, I have learned a lot more

Before his time as a professor at a university, Jeffrey Williams worked as guard at the New York State correctional prison. He spent most of his time working at Downstate Correction Facility in Fishkill, New York. The prison had a “campus” style in which cluster of cells were arranged in horseshoe shape, rather than long rows. This style seemingly permitted for a more pleasing environment with less chaos. I decided to go back to school to further my education so that I could obtain a degree that would help me to elevate in my career. I have seen people from my community use jail as a revolving door. As a young adult, I admired the teachers, police officers, principals, entrepreneurs and others in my neighborhood that tried to steer others in the right direction. I admired those relationships and have always wanted to become a parole officer. I have worked as a probation officer for adults for approximately 8.5 years and have steered many adults in the right direction.…

My career at the Colorado Department of Corrections has afforded me the opportunity to obtain first-rate experience in the field of criminal justice and the correctional industry. My profession began five years ago at the Colorado State Penitentiary working with maximum security offenders, as well as, behavioral at risk offenders and offenders with special needs that are categorized under the Americans with Disabilities Act. While CSP, I was assigned to both housing and security. It was in these units that I developed the skill to address offender issues and concerns. This is in addition to learning how to use communication skills and to utilize policies to assist in de-escalating situations that had the potential to go awry.…

Juvenile Mentor and Youth Services Aide I am pursuing my A.A.S. degree in criminal justice in hopes of one day obtaining employment in the juvenile justice system, more specifically in the field of juvenile mentoring and rehabilitation. Growing up as a troubled youth myself and being part of the juvenile justice system I feel that I have something positive to offer to today’s youth. I have experienced many hardships throughout my adult life that I otherwise would not have experienced had I abided by the law as a teenager. I am a direct result of the positive influence that the juvenile justice system can have on an individual.…

Adapting to a New Life The word inmate holds a lot of negative connotations to those who are not in jail and those who have not experienced life behind bars. A concept that has been introduced is education in prison. Going to jail can be a hard time for people and their families, but it can be turned into a learning environment if they are properly educated by teaching officials who are qualified and are taught significant skills. “Prisoners who held apprenticeships or jobs in trades that included HVAC, woodworking, plumbing, welding and commercial driving lauded their opportunities….”…

In my opinion the most meaningful guide to creating new criminal justice policies and practices is the positivist paradigm. This paradigm seem to be very open-minded and addresses many issues that may cause one to commit crime. As stated in our second week of class lecture this paradigm attempts to find facts or understanding through studies/measurements. In order for our criminal justice policies to be effective/worthwhile there is a need for criminologist and those of power to determine if particular policies should be implemented or discontinued. This paradigm also recognizes that there are factors outside of the offender’s control that can influence their criminal behavior (Cullen, Agnew, Wilcox, 2014).…

Prosecutors play an influential role in a court and yet nobody even knows what a prosecutor is. For those who do know, their impression is bad, who could blame them even the word sounds unpleasing. Prosecutors play just as big a role as any criminal defense lawyer, maybe even bigger because while criminal defence lawyers defend, they can also defend those that have wronged and this is when a prosecutor comes in and keeps dangerous people away from society. It’s quite easy to misunderstand a prosecutor as they go against the defense lawyers, in which society praises because they ‘prove the innocent, innocent’. Though this isn’t always the case.…

One was when I was a juvenile being at wrong place at the wrong time and my second one five years ago. My first experience wasn’t so bad, but the second encounter was clearly my fault and it was awful. I had just taken a job with State Farm and leaving my position at Free Star Bank. What is the goal of ethics in the context of respecting rights and the ethics of duty in the criminal justice system? The ultimate goal is to do what is right and morally sound as law enforcement officers. Many times officers forget what the badge that they wear upon their chest represents; it stands for honor and integrity. As law enforcement professionals we have chosen a way of life, most hold themselves to a much higher standard than those that they serve (Leland, 2010).…

The limits of the traditional criminal justice approach and the advantages of using funds differently Traditional reactive crime control is not effective in a world driven by science, money and evidence. Instead of waiting for the crime to happen, we must stop children from developing a life of crime. In addition, the traditional system continues to repress minorities who would have otherwise been victims of crime is they were not in custody. It is important to note, that it is not only prevention advocates that have raised the idea to move towards evidence-based practices rather it was also raised by Drummond when hired in 2011. He recommended that the government should reduce their expenditures by using evidence-based programs and strategies…
