What is Criminal Justice? Criminal Justice is the system of practices and institutions of governments directed at upholding social control, deterring and mitigating crime. Criminal justice comes from the Roman republic and medieval England; the punishments come from the ancient times. In the 1800s the prison system began and now it is the first form of punishment. Criminal justice has three parts, Law Enforcement, the courts, and corrections. They all work together to prevent laws from being broken and punish the ones that break it. They all have different goals and responsibilities in the criminal justice system. The law enforcement goal is to enforce the laws so people will follow that law and also catch the people that are breaking the law. Law enforcement captures the bad guys, takes them to court. Then the court’s goal is to judge the problem and see if they deserve to go to jail or be put on probation. Then corrections are where the person found guilty will go to prison. They will have to go through the corrections system until their jail sentence is over. The correction system goal is to get the inmates back in the community and to fit in with society after they have been in jail. The main goal of all three is to separate the bad from the good. The criminal justice goal is to help the criminals fit into society. The primary responsibility of the criminal justice system is to make people pay for their actions. Law enforcement is the first one in contact with the criminal; they are the police officers, FBI, and department of homeland security.
