Criminal Justice Class Reflection

Before coming into this class I had never really formed an opinion on a lot of things regarding the criminal justice system, I simply never needed to. I didn’t have any prior knowledge about things like life without parole, or the emotional wellbeing of police officers. I will admit I was very naïve about a lot of it. This class has caused me to think about something that I may never have come in contact with otherwise. I have formed or changed a lot of opinions because of things discussed in class. I formed opinions about the death penalty, punishment for crimes being a deterrent for crime and zero tolerances in schools and the emotional wellbeing of police officers based on things that I learned in this class.

My opinion has been shaped by a lot of facts and that were discussed in detail in this class. I will be the first to admit that some of my opinions and thoughts about some of these issues were wrong coming into this class. This class, along with other things I have been doing this semester have really opened my eyes to a lot of injustice and things around me that I need to be more aware of. It has been very good for me to step back and look at things from other peoples perspective rather than just my own and that is exactly what this class has helped me to do. I think I have realized some of my own biases and opened up my eyes to a lot of subjects. I have formed or changed a lot of opinions because of things discussed in class. I formed opinions about the death penalty, punishment for crimes being a deterrent for crime, zero tolerances in schools based on things that I learned in this class. I hope to not be apart of the problem anymore, but to be a part of the

I thought I was firm on my views on capital punishment until we recently covered the topic in class. When asked to write down my original thoughts on capital punishment, I wrote: I am against the death penalty. I’m against it partly because of my religious upbringing, that condones capital punishment, and partly because I think there’s a possibility someone can be executed when innocent. I don’t really know what the death penalty is about today.…

Growing up, I knew the feeling of the police presence on campus was unhealthy to a learning environment. I knew many of the Latino misfits who were pushed out by teachers, administrators and police because of fear, who felt disillusioned by the school system that stigmatized and contributed to delinquency. This course has taught me a lot about my surroundings and the disproportionate contact Latino youth make with the juvenile justice system but it also has given me hope. That hope is love. With all the madness going on in the world, the guises of racism, systematic oppression, there will always remain the loyal, the few whose love empowers them to empower others.…

Introduction Prior to enrolling in the unit ‘Indigenous issues in criminal justice,’ I was only aware of minor details in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders in the criminal justice system. The information I have been previously fed was enforced by negative and stereotypical representations. I had assumed indigenous people were unwilling to conform to expectations of modern society as a retaliation to the actions of the white settlers. However, Indigenous issues in criminal justice has altered my personal perceptions of Australian Indigenous people. In particular matters concerning Indigenous identity, recognizing the value of Indigenous customary law, and the reoccurring matters for Indigenous young people.…

This class has been a very fun and enjoyable experience in learning about the very important Warren Court Era. The Warren Court has led the way for variety of changes in the United States of America through landmark decisions like Brown v. Board of Education and Miranda v. Arizona. A very interesting thing that I learned was that Earl Warren was appointed by Dwight D. Eisenhower with the intent that Warren would be a very conservative judge, but as cases were presented to the Supreme Court the American people soon learned that Warren was a very liberal and revolutionary Supreme Court justice. Warren must have been a very convincing justice to have many case decisions go his way. This course was very good in showing how the atmosphere at the time was many a times in…

As citizens it is our jobs to evaluate every candidate’s proposals so that we can determine which candidate has the “right” or “good” solution to the nation’s problems. Some voters focus only on the consequences of these potential policies while others focus on the consequences and other factors that influence the duties, rights, and rules of the people. The three areas that can easily be discussed in terms of consequences or duties and rights include education, health care, and criminal justice potential policies. In order to find a “right” or “good” solution for both education and health care, I think it is best to focus on only the consequences of the proposals which is known as Consequentialism. However, potential criminal justice policy’s…

At the center of this debate has been a conversation about inequities in the basic functioning of the criminal justice system including police practices, the use of force and aggressive policing, arrest and prosecution policies, the severity of criminal sentences, and the disparate impact many of these policies have on communities of color. This paper discusses the person-in-environment framework as it relates to race and the criminal justice reform in the United States. The writer will expand on the social role problem identification, problems in the environment, mental health problem identification, and physical health problem identification as it relates to the criminal justice reform. Factor I: Social Role Problem Identification…

The stages involved in the criminal justice system’s response to crime are classified as police, courts, and corrections (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015). Though some researchers argue that the criminal justice system is not actually a system, most educational texts are based on these classifications (Bernard & Robin, 2001). Once a crime is reported or discovered, the crime is investigated, an arrest is made, and the offender makes an initial court appearance (Bohm & Haley, 2014). There is a conglomerate of other factors that will determine the outcome of the case and if the offender will or will not receive punishment for the crime committed. Law enforcement learns about crimes from victims or other citizens.…

Even though I never attended or been part of an activist group, as part of the black community and as an African American, I always stood up for the black movement in our country. After taking this class I consider to be more focused on being a part of an activist group, to stand up for the right believes. Me, and I can speak for the whole black community is tired of the violence against individuals of color. You can’t just say white are good and black are back, we find in every race good and bad people. It is unacceptable to treat people less just because of an individual’s skin color, nation, sexual preferences, gender, etc.…

The major objective of this assignment is to select an area of criminal justice in which I feel needs to be improved , the area of criminal justice that I feel needs to be improved is that I feel that African-Americans needs to be treated fairly in the criminal justice system. If someone was to look at the statistics of African-Americans in the correctional system it would be alarming. In the last three decades the amount of inmates in American prisons have risen from 500,000 to well over two million inmates.…

I originally took this class simply because it filled one of my goal areas and it fit into my schedule well. When I signed up for this class I remember thinking how much information could I possibly learn about American racial minorities that I didn’t already know? I thought I already knew everything there was to know about the subject, but I was wrong. I am a white individual, and I think that may have hindered my ability to relate to a lot of the subjects we talked about in class, but I always tried to view things for a different perspective, and put myself in other people’s shoes. I learned a lot of new information that I didn’t previously know about before taking this class.…

In this essay I will reflect on the few assumptions and understandings I had about crime and see how they have changed. Upon arriving at De Montfort University to study Criminology and Criminal Justice, I had average knowledge about crime and punishment i.e. insight into biological and psychological perspectives of crime having studied A-level Law and Psychology beforehand. However I did expect to delve so deep into the history and other aspects of Criminology during this first semester. During A-level Law I have read many case studies of murder, manslaughter, GBH, rape etc. I found the main reasons behind committing these crimes were usually motives for revenge, loss of control, hate, rage, and biological inheritance of 'criminal genes ' such as Monoamine oxidase A which makes individuals more prone to exert violence.…

Coming into the spring 2016 semester I was a junior Justice Studies major at Clemson University with 72 credit hours completed. I had just transferred to Clemson in the fall of 2015 for engineering and switched majors. In the engineering program it was always lectured to use oral and written communication to communicate ideas and concepts clearly with other students. Similar to the stigma of engineering students, I struggled with writing. I had a hard time with making my ideas within a paper obvious and with meeting the minimum length requirements for a written assignment.…
