The preliminary is the foundation of the entire criminal investigation. The investigation includes: Responding to immediate needs and rendering aid to the injured, noting such facts as the position of victims or injured subjects, recording spontaneous statements, determining the crime has been committed, initiating enforcement action, securing the crime scene and protecting evidence, determining the need for investigative specialists, and compiling a thorough ad accurate report of activities (p. 185). There are more activities included in the preliminary investigation, but the main objective is to determine whether the suspected crime is homicide, an accidental death, suicide, and/or death by natural causes. This questioning is called interrogation, information-gathering activity of police officers that involves the direct questioning of suspects. There are different types of interrogation styles that has been used before in the past years. Physical abuse, officers beating suspects until they confessed to the crime. This method has been frowned upon, because suspects would confess only to stop the pain. Another type is inherent coercion, fall short of physical abuse, but nonetheless pressure the suspects to reveal information. Officers would not physically abuse the suspects, but placed the suspect in a hostile atmosphere. Suspects could be sitting under a blinding light for hours and just being stared at. The pressure would just make a person crumble. The last type of interrogation is psychological manipulation, actions by police interviewers that are designed to pressure suspects to admit information and that are based on subtle forms of intimidation and
