Crime Scene-Personal Narrative

Seeing the police cars arriving, hearing ambulances honk their way through the busy streets, feeling the anxiousness, tasting the tears as they roll down my face, and smelling the pollution in the air, I realized I’m involved in a crime scene. When I was in 3rd grade, I lived in Brooklyn and went to school in Manhattan. I would take the subway everyday with my dad and brother. One day after school, my dad was holding mine and my brother’s hand while waiting for the R train to come. It was just like any other day; Q train first then the R. We were all calmly standing on the platform just when I felt my dad flinging my hand off. I heard my dad yelling, “Stop him!” Just when the train arrived, I turned around and saw the perpetrator. He was tall and dark skinned wearing baggy jeans and a black t-shirt running up the stairs behind us. My dad was already chasing after him. I was still clueless as to what he took. At the stairs, I saw my brother crouched down on the third step. His hands were placed around his ribs and he looked like he was in pain, as if he had been pushed down or something. Everything was happening too fast.

He was pointing. I didn’t know what he was pointing to until I looked down. It was my dad’s golden necklace, one he had for almost a decade. It was on the same step my brother was crouched down on. I went to pick it up. As this was happening, my dad was coming back down the stairs. Coincidentally, another train had just arrived. We all went on the train and started to head home. As we sat on the train, my dad was giving quick body checks to my brother and me to see if we were injured. I was fine, but my brother’s left rib was bruised. When we got home, he called the police to report a robbery and requested an ambulance. I was in the house looking out the window when they arrived. I saw my dad and brother go in the ambulance and I was home with my grandma, waiting for them to come

I headed into the courtroom of Judge Thomas Marcelain to observe my first courtroom trial. The trial involved a 31-year-old man named, Daniel Bohanna, of Pataskala. Mr. Bohanna decided to represent himself in his trial for fear of misrepresentation. He was charged with rape, kidnapping, and felonious assault. I have seen footage on T.V. from famous trials and of course seen reenactments from Hollywood, but I have never been to one in person until now.…

In the criminal justice world, the theory of criminal investigation is laid out in a way that seems to be the same for every situation, but that is not the case in all cases. In some cases, the process has to be critiqued to fit the situation. In the world we live in we criminals are unfortunately getting better and better at committing crimes with little trace. People believe that the information investigators need are right their hands because of the CSI effect. This makes it harder and harder for criminal investigators to do their jobs and track down criminals because the public has this false since that they have magical technologies just like they have on the television.…

All of the above concerns regarding forensic testimony presents a significant problem in our courtrooms where the negligent action be extremely high. Juries give undue attention to the testimony presented by forensic scientists and the above issues can pose a significant threat to the resulting judgment. Any ethical forensic examiner would not mislead the courtroom but as depicted above, this is certainly not the case. Thompson & Dioso-Villa (2008) argue that many areas of forensic science are under-researched and given undue power to their reliability, in which forensic scientists have used these techniques and presented results in the courtroom in a careless manner. They present an example of the case, Robin Lovitt v. Commonwealth of Virginia, where forensic evidence linked Lovitt directly to the crime. "…

One of the police officers checked the scene and immediately called for backup as he proceeds to knock on the door for a response. He calls out “it’s a negative a negative I’m going in” to no one in particular. The officer in his steel toed boots which accompanied his police uniform kicked the door open only to have the door slam back close. As I stand there watching the police officer take his semi-automatic gun out of the leather band holster and proceed to enter the apartment complex across the walkway more units have arrived to start sectioning off the area with yellow crime scene tape. To my horror, a man’s body lay at the front door with blood pooling around his body when a petite brown skin female officer approaches me and moves me out of sight of the action.…

If I had a choice in what career field I wanted to go into, I would go into either forensics or law, which also work hand in hand. I’ve always been fascinated with helping people, especially in the forms of getting justice for those who deserve it. Ever since I was a young girl, I had a keen interest in how the human mind works and what causes people to act the way that they do, mainly in criminals. Because of this interest, I took a course in AP Psychology my junior year of high school, which sustained my attraction in wanting to go into forensics or law. In the summer of 2017, I was invited to attend a National Youth Leadership Forum conference dealing with the nation’s security in the units of intelligence, defense, and diplomacy.…

The first thing I would do in processing the crime scene is interview the first officer that arrived at the crime scene to establish a theory of the case. Second I would examine the crime scene to see if the theory of the case is substantiated by what I observed. During this time I would start identifying possible items of evidence, identifying entry and exit points and getting a general outline of the homicide scene. Third, I would take some pictures. Photographing the scene would allow me to record a pictorial view of what the scene looked like undisturbed and to record items that is possible evidence.…
