There has been a lot of discrimination in sentencing where for example, a white man would receive a lighter sentence than an African American would. This is a current issue that we are dealing with in the United States and I think that it is unjust. It is only rational that everyone receive the same punishment if they have committed the same offense. In order for this to be established, the sentencing of a criminal should be subjected to appeal. That means that if a judge rules a harsh sentence on a criminal that it has the power to be appealed if discrimination is in play. There should also be a restriction on the freedom of judges to establish sentences should to further reduce discrimination (Zastrow, 201, p. 315). I think that it would certainly reduce our crime rates because there would be less of a chance for discrimination when dealing with sentences. Another possible idea that could help reduce crime rate in our state would be to establish more diversion programs. The goal of these types of programs is to prevent adolescents from committing crimes. These types of programs allow adolescents to experience what it would be like to be in prison or jail. They go to such great lengths to help keep these young adolescents from entering the criminal justice system in the first place. (Zastrow, 2010, p. 316-17).
