Crime Prevention And The Criminal Justice System Essay

To begin with, what is my definition crime prevention? Well, the prefix of pre means before, prior or in advance so that automatically means stopping something before it happens. When it comes to trying to prevent crime, we as people in the Criminal Justice field have to put laws, programs and practices in order to stop a crime before it happens. Also, one might say that it isn’t all on the police officers or Criminal Justice professionals. The main part of preventing crime is that people in the community has to be willing to help and come forth with any information. Police officials can’t stop something that they don’t know anything about. Community policing is a very effective style and it helps the community feel safe enough to actually release information on a crime that could potentially harm others. In order to know the relationship between the two, the role of the criminal justice system must be understood. “The role of the criminal justice system is of course oriented to detecting and punishing crimes that have already taken place” (Lea, 2007, pg1). This could also be another way to prevent crime from happening. Seeing people get in trouble with the law helps others realize that crime isn’t the road that should be taken. Some may believe that you can’t have one without the other. We can’t prevent crime if there is no one to regulate and punish the wrongdoers since the role of the criminal justice system is to punish the offenders. For example, how can someone get arrested if there aren’t any penalties for doing the crime?
