These percentages represent a small increase for the federal prisoners and a small decrease for state prisoners. In 2002 about 25% of convicted property and drug offenders in local jails had committed their crimes to get money for drugs. In federal prisons property offenders were less than half as likely as drug offenders to report drug money as a motive in their offenses. There is no doubt crime and drugs is a problem in the United States. Upon further research I discovered violent crimes were also on the rise. These are crimes categorized by offense are rape, murder, robbery, aggravated assault. Most crime related cases involving drugs is a violent crime.Violent crimes are defined in the UCR Program as those offenses that involve force or threat of force. According to the FBI’s website http://www.fbi.gov, In 2015, an estimated 1,197,704 violent crimes occurred nationwide, an increase of 3.9 percent from the 2014 estimate. Which means we are on an increase for violent crimes. A chart they provided showed that from 2012-2014 the rate of violent crimes was being reduced. Then all of a sudden it took a spike up in 2015. Those 5 steps include giving harsher punishment to repeat offenders in order to prevent the cycle from continuing. Secondly there could be more promoted and cheaper intervention clinics for those who need to get clean and cant seem to do it on their own. People who have more of a choice and like where they are at are bound to keep going back to seek the help they need. Next there needs to be stricter control on the borders, that way it prevent the illegal transportation into the United States. If they can sneak it past us now I'm sure there is more we can do to plug up the holes. Fourth there needs to be more of a focus on the bigger more dangerous drug criminals. Most of my research saw police arresting people for marijuana or any type of small possession. That isn't cutting off the source. If police spend more effort going after the suppliers in the United States I see things changing in a positive way. Lastly, there needs to be a boost in the economy. A lot of people in poverty look to drug dealing to make money. That's why you see more drug cases in poorer areas. Not to say drugs aren't everywhere, but if we focus on creating more good paying jobs there won't be a need for selling drugs.
